Hey there! My name is Brittnee I am from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I am 16 years old and play rugby and ringette. I am currently going through Team Canada rugby training camps. I live on an acreage 5 minutes from where I go to school.I got my licence in August and enjoy outting with my friends and family. I love to travel and im going to Spain, France and Italy in April with our school travel club. I am also going to ireland and the UK in august for rugby. I also play ringette competitively I play for Team Saskatchewan. I am 5'9 with blond hair and blue eyes. I am an only child.
HI! My name is Chris. I like arts, cross country, track & field, baseball, and football. I live Wisconsin and I am 17 year old. I work for grandpa at the farms. I am 5'9 with brown hair and brown eyes. I have a older sister.
I do not live in the Depression, but there are many people who do not have jobs and are poor here too. In my town, there are poor students who can not pay for lunch but they can lunch because they qualify for free or reduced lunch. Walter Cunningham was poor and he didn't bring a lunch or have money to buy a lunch so he starved.
Boo Radley was a trouble maker when he was younger. He was arrested with a group of other boys. The other boys went to the state industrial school as punishment. Boo didn't because his dad promised that his son would not get into any more trouble.
- The connections I made is that it sounds like a small town simular to Delisle (where I go to school) where everyone knows everyone. -The social issues I become aware of is Boo Radley is a creep and has major problems social and mental. - I agrree with you that Boo Radley would really be part of the story he will just set a backround. I think this because thius book is aspouse to be about blacks and he isnt black hes just unstable. -I'd describe Boo as a criminal who is mentally unstable. - An outsider is someone who either doesn't apply themselves or someone who is left out. SOme people are outsiders because there either unliked, other people are jelous of them, or they don't apply themselves. The Radley Family is outsiders. They don't apply themselves to community activities.
Chapter One- The Radleys, welcome anywhere in town, kept to themselves, a preilection unforgivable in Maycomb. I think this is the most important sentence in chapter one because it introduces the Radleys and it sums them up.
Chapter two- .....she discovered that I was literate and looked at me with more than fait distased. This is what i think is the most important sentence in chapter two because it tells us Scout is literate and tells us how the teacher reacts to it.
Chapter three- Atticus said the Ewells had been the disgrace of Maycomb for three generations. This is what i thinbk is the most important sentence in chapter three because it tells us about the Ewells which i think will be more in the story
The children are always thinking and talking about Boo because they have never seen him. He never comes out of the house. They heard stories about him and are curious about him.
There are many urban legends about this area. There is the Beast of Bray Road, about a beast or werewolf that people may see on dark foggy nights. And there are legends that many places are haunted in Kenosha, like the Kemper Center, the Opera House, and the Simmons Library.
I know that Boo's real name is Arthur. The children are scared of him and his house. When they went to peek in the window, Jem caught his pants on the fence. He folded Jem's pants and left them on the fence for him. They know that Boo watches them. They think that he is leaving them gifts in the tree. He left dolls that look like Jem and Scout, chewing gum, and two really old, polished Indian head pennies. They are thinking he is not a scary person.
Education today is different from the education provided to the children of Maycomb. The children started in first grade then. In first grade you were not supposed to know the alphabet and how to read when you started. Now you learn the alphabet and how to read words and small books in kindergarten.
In chapter two, it said that children were not supposed to write until the third grade. Their education was way behind ours. Miss Caroline doesn't use books to teach. Scout says it's like if you want to learn about cows, you go milk one.
Dill woyuld walk by, cough at Jem, and Jem would fake a plunge into Dill's thigh. I think this is a funny passage because hes mocking what happened when Boo stabbed his father. I connect to this because when I was little I always mocked people and I usually got into trouble much like Dill and Jem did.
The kids are so comsumed with Boo because hes a town outsider and he is an ex criminal what makes peoples imaginations go wild. I connect to this because even now when when somethings out of the ordinary I try to figure things out. Are there any popular urban myths or legends in your area?
There are some urban myths not where I live but by where my Aunt and Uncle live (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) which is a 2 hour drive from Delisle. The myth is called the Saint Louis Light (it is proven not to be a myth which was explored by NASA)It is that there was a passenger train accident which left a new mother without her baby and when she looks for her baby she is swinging a lantern. YES you can see the ligh coming closer and closer i have seen it myself.
We also learnt Boo can enjoy himself (hearing him laughing) and that Boo does leave his house (when he goes to the tree) I would saya new charaterisctic of Boo would be that he isnt what at first the kids say about him.
I believe Harper Lee thinks education is over rated. In ways I agree with this. There is booksmart and life smart. I know kids with crazy high averages but there also the most 'stupid' kids at life. And I know kids who are not so book smart but are wicked smart at life. Education now compared to back when the book was written is way different. For example my uncle is a doctor and he can't even help me with my grade 11 and grade 12 math cources. Some of the things we learn today is way different and unneccisary for life and future jobs.
Examples of Courage- Jem accepting all the dares, Atticus telling the kids he will believe Calpurnia before the kids on there behavor (since hes black normally back in theses days blacks always were blambed and took the punishment for everything) Examples of Cowardness- Dill telling Atticus he lost his pants playing strip poker not telling him the truth. The best example of courage in this novel is Atticus hireing a black nanny. The best exampe of cowardness in this novel is the kids assuming so many things about the Radleys instead of finding out the truth for themselves. Its almost like a rumor whci 99% of the time arn't true.
Hey Brittnee and Chris. You guys did a pretty good job on your posts. You answered all of the questions and put some thought into them. Both of you had asked questions with each other to carry the conversation. On evaluaing you guys i give a 3.5 on Self-Reflection of Learning, 3 on Connections to Novel, Self, and Word and finally, 4 on Contribution to the learning Community
Brittnee and Chris, You two need to begin your discussion from Focus 4 about foils and create together the answer to Activity 3 question 3. You are both sharing your ideas, but remember to try to invite discussion and, if your partner does invite discussion, remember to respond back.
Hope you are enjoying the book. Things are going to get a lot more intense now!
It might be more “not telling the whole story” since Boo stays in the house the whole time and Dill only comes down for summer time so by either Boo or Dill telling the story wouldn’t be the whole truth/story. That you don’t know the whole story until you live it is what Atticus is trying to explain to Scout. The authors point of view is shown through Atticus explaining it to Scout. Extend Harper Lee does this because she was probibly a child when this time was so she was explaining it from her point of view when she was a child. I think a good work of historical fiction is when it’s a true story or when there author relates real surcomstances. At times it could distract because we only here onesided information. Like when they (scout) where explaining Boo, it was one sided info.
Calpurnia- Black, Housekeeper of Scout’s family, Accepted by Atticus family (white), smart. Calpurnia brings reactions from Scout when Calpurnai plays a mothering roll (cleaning Scout, calling her in from outside) Scout gets uptight/ annoyed with Calpurnia. Calpurnia helps Scout learn about herself by just taking a mothering and supportive roll in her life.
Extend-The antagonist is Alexandra. She is trying to make Scout something shes not (more lady like) not like the tomboy she is. Also she is trying to get Atticus to raise his family differently. True stories makes a good work of historical fiction.
change of attitude Starts to spend more time alone Starts reading the paper Makes his own decisionss Difficult to live with Moody Large appetite Tries to tell Scout what to do Tries to protect Atticus and Scout from harm Had a growth spurt
Focus 6 Extend- The mocking bird is a central symbol in the novel because mocking birds represent peace, and innocense of people in the novel. Scout-she is very mature for her young age , very outgoing and opposite of shy what most kids are at her age. About 8. Dill- A boy who comes down to Maycomb in the summer. Scouts friend. About 8. Atticus- The father of Jem and Scout. Hes a lawyer Tom- Hes a black man who was charged with raping a girl Calpurnia- She steped up and took the mothering roll for the kids, that went even hers. Also she is black in a white community. Housekeeper/Nanny of Atticus Finch’s family. Jem- Around 12. Brother to Scout and son of Atticus Boo- he is not what everyone thought he was at the beging, like when he put the blanket over Scout at the fire. To be an individual in society means to be a “town loner’ and not take part in community events. Atticus at first comes off a little femine because of his wording and how he speaks. A sterotype of a man usually is big, muscular, breadwinner, aggressive. Atticus doesn’t come off as anyone these except as the breadwinner.
Focus #7-Explore Scout- She is slowly changing her views in how black people are treated. She is learning about why black people are treated the way they are and why her dad has to be a lawyer for a black person. Generally she is being more educated on black people. Mr. Cunningham- He is slowing changing his views in the sense of his human goodness is displayed when Scouts politeness compels him to disperse the men at the jail.
Hey Chris! How are you liking the book? Are you blogging anymore? Just wondering because there is some question that have to do with "with your partner" questions and discussions. Anywase I wont be blogging the whole week of the 7th.
I agree that Aunt Alexandria is an antagonist. She is bringing trouble to the Finch family, especially Scout, since she came to stay. Scout is the protagonist in Harper Lee's novel. It is through her eyes that the story is told. Two minor characters are Jem and Dill. Jem is 12 years old. Calpurnia now calls him Mister Jem. He getting older now. He isn't wanting to play with Scout anymore. He stays in the house and reads the sports in the paper.
Aunt Alexandria is Atticus' sister. She grew up at The Landing where her relatived for a long time. She feels that she is 'high society' compared with others. She puts on 'airs'. She doesn't like Calpurnia. She thinks that Atticus is raising Scout wrong. She feels that she could be a good mother influence for Scout. She could teach her to wear dresses and act like a girl. She has the women from Maycomb over and they talk. She was irritatble on the Lord's day. Scout believed it was because o9f her corset. She was not fat but wanted an 'hour glass figure'.
In chapter 15, there was a knock at the fi9nch's door. It was Mr. Heck Tate. He wanted Atticus to come out and talk to the group of men (mob) protecting Tom Robinson. They felt that he wouldn't be safe in the jail because of the Old Sarum Gang. They wanted him to move the trial to a new venue to keep him safe. Jem didn't know what they were talking about so he told Atticus that there was a phone call for him. I think Jem was worried. Scout was afraid.
Hi this is Danielle C. from Ms. J's second period class at Central High School. I think that the mob showing up at the Finch's house was a big turning point in the book. To me, this is the part where Scout really starts to understand that her father defending Tom Robinson in the trial is huge. Before, she knew that the majority of Maycomb was agianst Atticus defending Tom to the best of his ability, but this is when she really begins to realize the seriousness of the situation and how strongly their feelings really are.
Hey, it's Matt, also from Ms. J's second hour class. I agree that Scout realized the severity of Atticus defending Tom at this point in the novel, and i also believe that this is a big coming-of-age event. It was at this point in the book that Scout started noticing the way that people act irrationaly when they get in a mob and how racism can cloud people's vision. From this point on in the story, Scout realizes that life isn't fair, and you just have to try to get used to it.
Mr. Heck Tate- Sherif- has no proof tom beat and raped mayella Bob Ewell- pointed fingers at tom for the beating of his daughter Mayella- Refuses to say that her dad beat her up Tom Robinson- says hes helped mayella out with her chores at home without pay Mr. Gilmore- Toms prosicuter
Harper Lee's theme of social injustice is still relevant today because we live with the golden rule today "treat others as you would like to be treated" in simple terms. It is relevant in my community at home and school.
I have witnessed personal hypocrisy alot. Like when friends parents say to my friends dont drink dont smoke but there parents did all of that when they where teens too
I think atticus is the hero. He is a person for the kids to look up to and he saved tom. He is the hero because he raised his children right, not racist and a wonderful single parent.
When a child asks you something, answer him, for goodness' sake. But don't make a production of it. Children are children, but they can spot an evasion quicker than adults, and evasion simply muddles 'em.(quote from atticus )
