  1. Hi my name is Shauna. I go to Delisle Composite School. I have a younger brother who is 13. I am involved in wrestling; I have wrestled since grade eight. I am 5’2”. I work as an activity leader at the pools in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I am trying to be a lifeguard; I have all of my certifications I just need to be hired by the city. Trying to get a job as a lifeguard in Saskatoon is difficult because you have to apply at City Hall and then they look at your certifications and availability schedule and if you fit their requirements exactly then you can get the job, but when you get a job with the City it takes forever because they hire people in huge mass groups. I enjoy hanging out with my friends in my free time. When I grow up I want to be a dentist because they make a lot of money for the amount of schooling it takes to become one.

  2. Hi Shauna; my name is Jessica. As you may know, I'm a sophomore at Westosha Central High School. I think it is cool that you have a younger brother; I have quite a few brothers and sisters myself. I am a bowler; I've been bowling sense i was three years old, and I have recently been accepted into a varsity league with an older group of people. I'am 5'1" and very random. I also listen to music all the time. I don't have a favorite song or artist; but if I'm not hanging out with my friends during my free time, I'm listening to the newest music. I do have one question for you though. What is a Composite School? I think it is great that you are an activity leader, and trying to become a lifeguard. When I graduate high school, I want to get accepted into NYU (New York University); that is my dream. I would also like to become a Pediatrition because I love children, and would like to help them. Im not a big fan of school, but I would do anything to pursue my dream.

  3. Hi Jessica. I am terrible at bowling, I never really understood the point of it; but maybe that’s just because I’m not very good at it. I like any kind of music but when I’m driving my friends and family always make fun of me when I sing because I don’t really listen to the music I make up my own words and beats or make the car dance, my friends beg me not to make the car dance though because it freaks them out, I’ve definitely made my boyfriend scream because of how I made the car dance while driving downtown and he thought I was going to hit the cars parked on the side. A composite school is a school where kids from the community go, in grade four the kids from Pike Lake Elementary School came to Delisle Elementary School, and then in grade nine the kids from Vanscoy School transferred to Delisle Composite School. Pike Lake School only goes from kindergarten to grade four because they don’t have enough kids to make it all the way to grade twelve, and Vanscoy School only goes from kindergarten to grade eight, Delisle Elementary goes from kindergarten to grade six, and Delisle Composite goes from grade seven to twelve (it’s really messed up because there isn’t a lot of kids around here). I think it’s great that you are pursuing your dreams because when someone doesn’t have goals and dreams in their lives I think it would be very sad. Have you ever been to Canada or on any big travelling trips? I have been from coast to coast in Canada and I have been as far south as Texas in the US, I’ve been to San Diego on a wrestling trip two years ago and may possibly be returning again this Christmas for three days, and this January I am going on a cruise to the Caribbean for my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary. Do you have any pets? When can you guys get your drivers licenses, my cousins (who live in the US) tried to explain it to me but I never understood them?

  4. Bowling takes a lot of practice I guess; but I would never be able to wrestle (I'm to weak). I think its cool that you have been to San Diego for wrestling; I was supposed to go to New York for a bowling competition, but I ended up not going. Unfortunately I haven't been to Canada or on any big trips; but I have been out of Wisconsin once, a few summers ago to Colorado. I'm so happy for your grandparents, with their 50th anniversary and all; and I think its cool that your going to the Carribean, on a cruise. I do have pets; I have two dogs and two cats. Do you have any pets yourself? In Wisconsin, we can get our license when we are 16, but can start driving at 15 and a half. Do you guys start out with temps? We have to take a class when were 15 and a half to see if were qualified to even start driving (its kind of hard to explain). I'm not able to drive till next year though; but I can't wait! The schooling systems here are different. We have Preschools, Grade schools, and High schools. All of the Grade schools that I know of are all Kindergarten to eigth grade, and then our High schools are all 10th grade to 12th.

  5. I have thirteen cats and I used to have a dog but we had to put her down because she had a tumor in her bum but hopefully after the cruise we can get a new one. In Saskatchewan we take a driving course through school when we turn 15 to get our 'learners license' or 'class 7'; with our learners we have to have someone who has an unrestricted drivers license in the passenger seat when we drive, we have to have that for nine months then we can go for our regular 'drivers license' or 'class 5'; when we get our class 5 license for the first six months we are only allowed one person who is not a family member in the car, after that we have to go 12 months with a perfect driving record (no major tickets), after that we have an unrestricted license. Where do the grade 9ers go? Most of the Schools in bigger cities in Saskatchewan are preschool or play school then Kindergarten to grade 8 and then grade 9 to 12, our school is different because we need more people to fill it.

  6. Chapter 1-3

I think Maycomb is a town a lot like Delisle because of the way the relationships of everyone is described and how some people are automatically outsiders because of their last names. I think it’s very stereotypical how Scout can talk for the other children in her class without even knowing them and just hearing about their families. It seems like there are definite ‘clicks’ in Maycomb and if your family isn’t in them then you can be picked on easily. When something happens to a family or person everyone knows and it can easily be blown up by rumors. Have you ever been in a situation where a rumor was spread about you? I think that the story about Boo stabbing his father in the leg is a rumor. I think that Scout and Jem will go to Boo’s house again and Boo will talk to them and become their friend. Boo seems like a kid who wanted to fit in but got involved with the wrong group of people and because of the decisions he made and his father over reacted and made him a loner/outsider, I don’t think Boo’s family ever let Boo’s mistake go. I think people are outsiders for many reasons; it could be the way they look, their views on life, the choices they make, or even the way their parents fit in, and many more reasons. I don’t think people choose to be outsiders, they are just being themselves. What do you think makes someone an outsider?

  7. I'm sorry you had to put your dog down; but the good thing is that your dog isn't suffering. Wait, so you can't get your final license for 27 months after you start the first class? What do you mean 'where do the grade 9ers go?' There are more people in other towns than in yours? I thought that the schools equally transported the kids to their closest school.

  8. Chapter 1-3
(sorry it is late, I did it on the focus page, not on our individual blog).

Maycomb is a little town full of the latest gossip of its citizens. The social issues are when something happens, no matter how small or big, it gets around fast; and you are expected to know what is going on at all times. When the Radley’s stopped going out in public, people started talking, whether or not it’s true. I believe that Boo Radley will come out and take a stand to what is being said about him and his family. I also believe that he will do something big and significant, and turn the plot of the book into the opposite way (the way it is going now). I might describe Boo as a mysterious guy that doesn’t care what is going on in his town right now, and that he keeps to himself. An outsider is a person who is always by themselves and doesn’t care about the things going on around them. Some people are outsiders because they don’t want to please others; and all they really want to do is be themselves.

I think your response to the focus has more depth than mine. I also like you, beleive that an outsider is them just being themselves, and not worrying about pleasing others.

  9. Chapters 4-7

I think it is funny how someone does anything in their power to get to know more about someone that they have heard about, but have never really seen. I once heard about this family, I'm not going to tell their personal lives; but I tried every trick in the book to find out who they were and if the story was all true. I also think its funny on how people only care about what they want, and nobody else’s feelings. I think the children are so consumed with Boo because of the 'rumors' about him; and I think they only want to fond out the truth. I can relate to their obsession completely. I try to find out the truth to all of the 'rumors' I hear; but sometimes if they seem personal, I just stay out of it. I'm not sure if there are any myths in my area; but I bet there is something going on around here. In this chapter I have learned that Boo may still be alive. I would use the characteristics of being sneaky and nice to also describe Boo.
I think Harper Lee thinks of education as important; but not always easy. This is familiar to what I think about education because I do think it is important; but at sometimes it could be confusing. The education today is easier I think because you can learn outside of school and it also seems like we have technology on out side, while the children of Maycomb probably don't have any technology.
Have you ever had a feeling of whether or not you should find out if something going around, like a rumor, is true or not?

  10. Chapter 4-7

I didn’t really find anything humorous; nothing made me laugh at all, nothing really came close to it. There may have been a few things that shocked me or made me scoff but nothing made me laugh, so I don’t think I can put much more into this part. Was there anything that you found humorous? If so what was it? I think the children are consumed with Boo because he is mysterious and something unknown; almost like a town legend. I have been consumed with interesting things like Boo in the past; for example there used to be an old barn down the road from my house that I would wonder about, I had heard stories that someone killed himself in it and I wondered if it was actually true, I would spend a few hours a week just sitting in the barn trying to figure things out; just last year I asked my neighbours (who were the owners of the land after the man killed himself) and they explained to me the real story and I wrote an English report on it. Have you ever been in a situation where you were consumed with something like Boo? What would you do if there was someone like Boo in your hometown? Would you be as consumed and intrigued as Scout, Jem, and Dill? In this chapter I learned that Boo is still living. I think that Boo was putting the things in the tree for Scout and Jem; I also think that Mr. Radley filled in the hole in the tree because he caught Boo putting something into it and doesn’t want Boo to have any contact with the outside world. I think Boo’s father made a mistake in his childhood that he doesn’t want Boo to make so he just traps him indoors for his whole life when he became near the age that he could make that mistake. Why do you think Mr. Radley filled the hole in the tree in (remember Atticus said the tree was perfectly healthy, but Mr. Radley said it was dying)? I think that Harper Lee thought that school was a waste of time and thought that you could learn just as well if not better and faster out of school in your own home (I think Scout was made to represent how Harper Lee feels about schooling). I think education is important but some things I already know from life experiences but other kids may not so it is necessary to teach it so that people may live successful lives. I think education now is somewhat similar to that of the education in Maycomb but because it was something new in Maycomb it was looked down on because I think small towns/communities have a difficult time dealing with big major changes like the education system. At this point in the story I think the most courageous character in the story is Scout because she wants to know more from Mrs. Maudie, and the most cowardly character in the story is Dill because he hasn’t done anything to stand out when it comes to dealing with the Radley house, I think Jem is the most intelligent main character because he thinks about his actions before he does them and is sure not to tell too much to Scout as not to scare her. Do you agree with my nominations of most cowardly, courageous, and intelligent?

    ReplyDelete
  11. There was only one thing in the book that I found funny; that has to be how Dill, Scout, and Jem did everything in their power to find out more about Arthur "Boo" Radley. Some of the things they did was epic. I have been in a situation like what is going on in the book with Boo; but it is mostly to do with gossip around my schools or between my friends. If there was someone in my hometown like Boo I beleive I would be consumed or obsessed like Dill, Scout, and Jem; just to find out the truth. I do agree with you on why Mr. Radley filled the whole in the tree. I also beleive that Mr. Radley is keeping Boo from the outside world so they don't find out the truth about him and his family. I do agree that Dill is the most cowardly character so far because he only follows Jem around, he has no important roll right now. I do not agree on your nominations for most courageous and intelligent. I think that Scout is the most intelligent because she I beleive stands out the most in school and gets reading lessons from Atticus, learns from the word on the street, and also learns from Mrs. Maudie. Then I think Jem is the most courageous because he is the one doing all the dirty work. He was the one taking the objects from the tree whole, he was the one to run up to the house (even if it was a dare/challenge), he was the one to sit on the back porch when one of the Radleys' walked past him, and to run back alone to the back of the Radleys' property to retrieve his pants. If I had to choose who the most important character in the book was right now, I would have to choose Jem. Who would you choose?

  12. Hey, I evaluated your group and gave you a 3 for self-reflection of Learning, 3 for Connections To Novel, Self, and World, and 3 for Contribution To The Learning Community. You did pretty well on understanding the book but you could make more connections and could prompt discussion a little better. Considering we are just starting, your group did really well.

If the book was said in the point of view of a guy, it would probably be more vag. Guys seem to leave out important details while girls seem to over do it. Girls extend the truth to make the story better and to try and get you to keep reading. I'm like that 100 percent of the time. I believe that Atticus told Scout that so she would stop judging people by how they look and act. It is true though; you can never tell the truth about a person until you spend time in their shoes. Harper tells the book in her perspective while in a girls narratation. I think she does that to show how life might of been for the younger generation in that specific era. The Depression was a hard time, and I believe that it is showed in the novel.

  15. Hi may name is Jason G. and I am 15 year old boy who attends Central High School. I would like to give some of my own opinions about To Kill a Mockingbird. While I was reading I was able to find tons of references that discriminated African Americans throughout the book. The one in particular that was hated throughout the town was Tom Robinson because he was charged with the crime of rape. Now I believe Tom Robinson isn't remembered for what he showed us because Tom Robinson is an actual man and he was a man that was proven guilty because the color of his skin. I believe Tom Robinson is just as significant in the march to give rights to African Americans such as Rosa Parks or even Martin Luther King Jr. With that said, the book also shows the South's attitude towards blacks at this time. In that time African Americans are treated as property and nothing more. Today we have different attitudes and if you think about it Tom Robinson might have opened our eyes and he might of been the first to show us that many would blame a person or even judge a person by the color of his skin even if that person is the nicest man on earth.

  16. Chapters 12-13

I think that Aunt Alexandria is the main antagoniser in the book. She tries to antagonise Scout into becoming a "proper" young lady; and to get Atticus to let her move in to help with Scout and Jem because he is going to be gone, with the trial and all. Aunt Alexandria is forcing Scout to look at herslf in profound ways. She tells Scout that she needs to wear different clothes and gives her dirty looks/scolds her when she is all muddy around other girls from around town. I think that if you use true facts about the past, and then put your own twist into it (like your own characters and the way the story ends up), you could make a great historical fiction book.

  17. I agree with you Alexandria is crazy!!! She was just like Scout and now shes tring to change her into something shes not. I also think that its Atticuss job to know when Scouts ready to become a lady it dosent just happen out of no where!!!

  18. Chapters 14-15

The mob scene tell me that the human natures in the book; are to take action when anything they think is wrong, is happening. They behave in what they think is the way to behave and that is usually the way of god, like the perfect life. They are all Baptists, but the worst are the “foot washing” Baptists; they don’t believe in pleasure (anything that makes you happy is a sin). Jem might have written a diary entry saying that; when I went to check up on my father, because I had this feeling that something was going to go wrong, I had a sheer surprise to see a group of strangers huddling around him. They were all looking and talking angrily, like Atticus had some deed to pay with them. I was trying to keep Scout under control; but then she started running towards him, and to our surprise, it helped him out of what might have happened (a fight). Everybody has something wrong with Atticus helping Tom, but all he is trying to do , is make things right.

  21. Chapters 16-19
    (focus #6)

It shows that there are many things in the novel to come that are very mysterious and unknown. I believe that it shows how the trial is going to go to. It probably isn’t going to go that well; but I think that Atticus has a good lead on things – and that he is going to find out the truth no matter what it costs him. I don’t know what chart it is talking about; but I think that Atticus’ name tells us that he is an older more educated individual, with his own views on life. Scout’s name tells us that she is young and that she might be a little bit of an explorer; Jem’s name tells us that he might be on the verge of maturity, but still cares greatly about his family and friends. Dill is the type of name that makes you want to think of what his parents were thinking; but you get to know that its not his real name, his real name is ‘to big for him being so little’, and that he is young and different form others of his age. Tom Robinson’s name tells us that he is an older man that may be different form others. (There are many more characters, but I can’t think of what to say about their names; so I did the main characters). To be an individual in society I think means; that you are uniquely different form everyone around you. Also, that you don’t really care what people say about you. Atticus’ character doesn’t align with the stereotype view of masculinity, I think because he isn’t the type to get into fights. He stands up for what he believes; but doesn’t use his muscles, he uses his brain (I think he is a gentleman, not a view of masculinity).

  22. Chapters 20-21
    (focus 7)

I think that Jem changed his view the most out of all the characters. He has ogne from a little boy that fooled around and didn't really care what people said; into a young man that has been acting more and more like his father everyday. You could tell when he was changing because he went through a quiet faze. Jem went quiet when he found his pants waiting for him at the Radley's place; but you could tell that he was slowly changing, and that his views on everyone and eveything was changing along with him.

  23. I agree with you about how if it was written from a guy's point of view that it would definately be more vague but a girl would make it more detailed. I think if the novel was narrated by Dill it would have been very patchy because Dill doesn’t live in Maycomb County all the time so it wouldn’t really give all of the information. If Boo Radley arrogated the story it would be very one sided because he has no contact with the outside world. I think Atticus is trying to explain to Scout that she shouldn’t just look at a person and assume that she knows their whole life story without even talking to them. Point of view is a very important factor in stories, because if a story is written from many points of view it can be very confusing, this is written very well in terms of point of view. Harper tells the story from an adult perspective so that it can be more detailed, as a person looks back on their memories and childhood they understand why things happen, whereas if it was written as a child from a child’s point of view it would be less detailed and I think readers would have a hard time making emotional connections with the story. From where the perspective of the story is a story can be easier or harder to understand. A good work of historical fiction is all about emotion, if you can’t emotionally connect to a story it can be difficult to continue and finish reading. Have you read other historical books (fiction or non fiction)? I have read historical books about the holocaust in past grades.

  24. Chapters 22-24
    (focus 8)

There were many turning points in the novel; but most of them weren't as important than the trial. The trial changed the views of many people. All there were, were a lot of racist people, then the trial happened because Tom Robinson was accused of beating and raping Mayelle Ewell; which made some of them pay attention to the way they were treating the "colored" people. So, it was a "black" against a "white". When the jury had to choose wether or not he is guilty or innocent; many people [black and white] were upset to see that they thought he was guilty. The kids (Scout, Jem, and Dill) were the most upset. But the best thing of all is that Tom Robinson gets a re-trial. This time i believe that they will find the truth and set him and the rest of the "blacks" free of the racist world they are in right now.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I do agree with you when you say Scout, Jem, and Dill were upset because in these chapters you definatly see that they are becoming more mature and understanding of their surroundings and what era they are really growing up in. Yes, the children are upset about the way the trial ended but Mrs. Maudie helps the children understand that in many many many ways, Atticus had won.
In the courtroom, Jem can just not believe that Tom was found guilty, he out of all three of the children is the most upset. Atticus explains the only way he knows how...being honest. He tells Jem "'when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins.'"
In that period of time, it was very true.

  26. (Focus 8)

Hi Jason G. again and I would like to contribute my thoughts towards the main events that have occured in "To Kill a Mockingbird." Here is my list of the most important and significant main events so far.
-Scout, Jem, and Dill use their creativity and imagination with Boo Radley for a few years
-Aunt Alexandra moves in with Aticus and the kids to give a feminant toch to the house
-Atticus is asked to defend an African American who is accused of raping a white man's daughter
    -The trial of Tom Robinson
-Tom is convicted guilty due to the color of his skin
-Tom dies trying to escape from his prison

Now I found my last main event as the most significant. While I have read and viewed most of these focus 8 blogs, I have come to the conclusion that many readers will say that Tom being convicted guilty or his trial are the most significant events of this book. I don't think they are wrong, but I want to give my insight on why Tom being killed while escaping from prison is the most important event so far. When Tom dies his death is symbolic. It shows that he believes and understands that he is a free man. I also belive that Tom realized and understood the outcome of what would happen if he escaped. So I think he wanted to get shot because this was the way he wanted to go out, his own way which to me seemed heroic and courageous. He kind of reminds me of Miss Dubose and how she showed courage by fighting her insulin medication addiction before she died. This also shows that Tom is free either alive or dead and no one can compare themselves to Tom because of the tenasity and emotions that Tom has delt with throughout his life, the good or the bad. Tom took his life into his own hands and would probably never rethink his decision. Now even though this has a dramatic effect towards me, the people of Maycomb aren't phased by Tom's sudden death. Most just think of him as a dumb and idiotic man that killed himself doing something foolish that only a black man would do. But if they would just take his death into consideration, it may have an effect on the next generations to come and how they view and descriminate a black man because of his skin and that not all black men are evil and synical. There is still much more to understand about Tom's reasons and why he choose his death to be like that, but his death would of opened my eyes and changed my life during this time, but I can't speak for everyone.

  27. Focus 4
I think the protagonist of the story is Scout, and the antagonist is Aunt Alexandra. Aunt Alexandra is very composed and sure of herself, she never doubts her opinion on anything. Aunt Alexandra can get a reaction from Scout at any point in the book; especially when trying to make her into a ‘proper young lady’ like Jessica has said earlier. She helps Scout learn about herself by making her look at herself from many different perspectives and helping her form opinions about other people. I think what makes a good work of historical fiction is the use of true facts from that time in history and playing on the important parts of it.

  28. Focus 5
The mob scene is a crucial moment in To Kill a Mockingbird because it shows how close of a family the Finch’s are because no matter how many times Atticus asks/tells Jem and Scout to leave but they wont because they know their father is in danger and would risk themselves to keep their father safe. Atticus teaches us about moral strength and remaining grounded in your character no matter what by staying level headed is a very stressful/scary situation that would have had anyone being far from normal, and he didn’t want his children seeing him being afraid and weak of a bunch of drunken guys who turned out to be basically harmless. Scout shows us that having a child in a dangerous situation can make people think ‘oh shoot should I be doing this in front of a kid, I don’t want to be the person that they learn this bad thing from’ and generally soothe the situation. To be an individual means to have your own opinions and views of the world and stand up for them no matter what, society doesn’t force citizens to take unpopular stances in order to promote change, but if you want change that’s generally the only way to bring it about. To ‘come of age’ means to grow up and realize that at a particular age you should be acting a certain way. A journal entry of Jem’s after the mob encounter may have looked something like this:
    Dear Journal,
So tonight was quite a night, Atticus was acting awfully weird throught the evening and around dinnertime he took a light, chair and newspaper and said not to wait up for him.
Scout and I thought it was quite odd of him to do that so we went ot bed and snuck out to go see what Atticus was up to. We headed downtown and saw Atticus sitting in front of the jail and a mob approached him, they seemed angry but Scout didn’t realize that so she jumped up and ran up to Atticus and stood by his side. She tried to have a casual conversation with Mr. Cunningham and it turns out she saved all of us from quite a beating because Mr. Cunningham made all the men leave.
    Signed,

  29. Chapters 24-27
    (focus 9)

Harper Lee's theme of social injustice is relevant today in many, many ways. There is social injustice in every public place. Social injustice isn't in courts today; but in the novel (within the Depression era), there was social injustice everywhere, including the courts. I believe people behave in the way of 'hypocricy' at least once in their lives to show what they believe. Everyone has their own opinions and religions; but in this book it is more "detailed" than people may show in person. Hypocricy is the main reason why the trial went the way it went; with the way the white people showed thier beliefs on the black people.

  30. Chapters 28-31
    (focus 10)

I think that Atticus Finch is the hero of the novel. He has done so many heroic things; helping others was a big one. In the beggining of the book he was a father that was always there for his kids, but when you start to get further and further into the book, his true beliefs start to show in everything he does. A big part of his "heroic title", was the trial. He helped a man that, I thought was truley innocent. Even though eveyone else was racist (except for Dill, Jem, Scout, and Mrs. Maudie), Atticus Finch helped a black man become free. Everyone was giving the Finch family greif about defending a negro, but Atticus saw the good in him. I just think that Atticus Finch was the real hero in this book because of all the good things he did - not only for himself and his family; but for the people around him, no matter what gender or color they were.
