  3. Hey, My name is Donald but everybody calls me D.J. I am fifteen and go to Central High School in South Eastern Wisconsin. I like sports. My favorites are basketball and football. I enjoy playing these sports and watching them. My favorite team in the NFL is The Green Bay Packers. I like college basketball and my favorite team is the Marquette Golden Eagles. I enjoy school except for the fact that i have to get up early. Some things i like doing are: reading, visiting with my family, playing cards, playing sports, wave boarding, and more. I have a jet-ski and ride it in the summer. Last year i started snowboarding. I am not the best but i still enjoy it. I sometimes play hockey in my driveway because my Dads girlfriend's kid plays hockey. I always visit my Grandparents. My Grandpa and I play cards. The games we play are cribbage and gin rummy. I see my other family a lot too, like my aunts, uncles, and cousins. I mainly see my cousins and they are really cool. So that is pretty much it. I look forward to talking to you. Bye.

  5. Hi.
I'm Salena, I'm fifteen, and in tenth grade. I'm in Ms. J's sixth hour class so I don't get to really be in a blog group, but I thought I'd introduce myself anyway. School's pretty cool so far, but sometimes the homework can get overwhelming. I like to hangout with my friends, they're pretty amazing. In my spare time, when I'm not hanging out with my friends, I like to read, draw, and/or listen to music (my favorite band is The Used). I'm also addicted to texting, I do it ALL the time. Umm, I think Canada is pretty cool one of my friends moved here last year from there, and as sad as it is I asked her why she didn't say aye. This summer I worked at an amusment park. It was pretty sweet because I met so many rad people there. Well I think that might sum me up a bit so yeah any questions go ahead and ask. Ohh and I LOVE pandas! Talk to you when you reply.

  6. I attend Delisle Composite School. Even though my school is boring, I like it. I prefer a small school because there is less problems with the students. I love my classes. At the moment I am taking Chemistry 20, Biology 20, Math A30 and English 20. I have two older brothers and a younger brother and sister who are also brats, but what can you expect from siblings? I have been told by several people that I am a bit on the wild side but I don't always agree. I can be strange at times but I can be dark also. I wear a lot of black but i have some colour in my wardrobe. I aslo enjoy playing card games with my family and friends and beat most of them when we play cribbage. This book seems like it will be a good one even though it doesn't fall under the type of reading material that I prefer.

  7. Delisle Composite School is a very interesting name for a school?. Anyways that's cool..I also play cards with my family, especially my grandfather. Even though he always some how beats me. Well somthing else to know about me is that I'm preppy and I LOVE animals, mostly dogs. What's your favorite pet? I had a question..How can you take Chemistry and Bio in the same year? I had to take Bio last year and now I'm in Chemistry. I'm just guessing its real different. Oh yeah and another thing about me I like taking pictures of random things. So I'm taking Photography this year. It's alot of fun. I've learned alot so far. I'm Hispanic, so yes I'm alittle different but not so much. I like being hispanic, although it has alot to it. Like one holiday that women celebrate is a young girl becoming a young women...in other words its called a QuinceaƱera. It's when you turn 15. So its sort of like a sweet sixteen. Well got to go..bye :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. I actually was taking Bio, Chem and Physics at one time this year but I dropped physics because I no longer needed it and it would have brought down my average. I would like to be able to celebrate different things like a Quinceanera, but my family doesn't follow much of my other backgrounds. I have many different backgrounds so I'm a lot different than others, but I like it. What is your favourate thing about being Hispanic?

  9. My impression of Maycomb is that they depend a lot on consistancy. Scout referrs to a couple things that the Radleys do that are not the ways of Maycomb.
How do you feel about Maycomb? Would you live there?

The social issues in the first three chapters are as follows:
    1. The Radleys didn’t spend much time visiting with the rest of the town
    a. They kept their doors and windows closed all week.
    b. They didn’t go to church

    2. Miss Caroline is upset with Scout because she knows how to read and write. She doesn’t want the children in the first grade to be able to read and they don’t learn to write untill the thrid grade.
Did you notice any other forms of social issues in the story so far?

I think that Boo Radley will become involved in the story through the summers where Dill is in Maycomb. I think that he will continue to ask questions about him and dare Jem to get closer to the house.

I would describe Boo as a psychopath, but that’s just me. I think that he was driven insane by the way that his father locked him up and treated him as a child. He had a bad childhood that infected his adulthood and his mental ability to deal with everyday people. I think that Boo Radley is just a person that has been judged by the stories that were told over the years.
    What do you think?

I think being an outsider can have more than one meaning.
It could mean not fitting in with others because you were told that you don’t belong in the area, or just wanting to be alone and staying secluded from other people by choice.

    Extend
In my opinion, I think that the most important sentences from each chapter are:

    1. Ch. 1 “Once the town was terrorized by a series of morbid nocturnal events: people’s chickens and household pets were found mutilated; although the culprit was Crazy Addie, who eventually drowned himself in Barker’s Eddy people still looked at the Radley Place, unwilling to discard their initial suspicions.”
o I chose this sentence because it tells us how much the Radleys are known in their town.

    2. Ch. 2 “Now you tell your father not to teach you any more. It’s best to begin reading with a fresh mind. You tell him I’ll take over from here and try to undo the damage---”
o This statement gives us an idea of the kind of teacher that Miss Caroline is.

    3. Ch. 3 “They don’t have to go to school, for on thing. Another thing, Mr. Bob Ewell, Burris’s father, was permitted to hunt and trap out of season.”
o We are introduced to the kind of people that the Ewell family are.

  10. There are some things early in the book that are humorous. When the kids immitate the Radley's I thought it was funny that they would even want to act like them. I also thought it was funny when they went into the Radley yard and Jem lost his pants. The excuse they were playing strip poker by Dill was really funny. I used to always where only my underwear around our house. The children are very curious about why Boo will not come out. They really want him to come out but they can not find a way to get him to. I have tried to get people in my neighborhood to come outside to play and game or somethign but hey would not. Well there is a myth that i do not belive and that is that where i live was built on an Indian Reserve or somthing but i think it is such a lie. I learned that Boo likes to keep his shades on his window closed. So he really does not want to be seen at all. Boo is lazy, boring, and probably easy going. I think that Lee feels education is important because she has part of the story take place in school showing that school is important. Even thought the main events of the story are over the summer she still puts a school year in to show the importance. I too, think that education is very important. Everyone needs to learn and go to school or our country would fall apart. I think the Maycomb education is different because they do not seem to want care if kids pretend school does not exist when they go home. Today kids get homework and are encouraged to read and stuff like that on there own time.

    ReplyDelete
  11. My opinion on Maycomb is that it seems like a nice town, everyone seems to know all their neighbors, and some what get along. I live in a town that I don't know as much of, but it seems quite and kind of lonely and boring. But in the summer down at the beach there is always a small beach partty for all the neighbors.
The social issuses in first three chapters in To Kill A Mockingbird are: Radley Family never shows their face, people think they have died, at least the younger ones do. Also Miss Caroline tells Scout that she can not read with her father because your notsuppose to know how to read or write in the first grade. And Miss Caroline to start fresh. And also Scout and Jem are finding things in the Radley's tree. They shouldn't be doing that I can just taste the trouble.

Boo Radley seems like he doesn't know how to act around other kids because he wasn't aloud. And I'm guessing that he seems to be friendly and he just needs to get out more to understand how it is to be a kid and not be an outsider. I had a feeling he will start to come in the story around chapter 6 or 7. And we will know and learn more about him, and maybe learn why he never comes out of his house.

I think an outsider is not interacting with other but themself, not fitting in to what the other people/kids are doing or wearing, and having a different perspective on things than others.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I find the humorous parts of the novel are when ever the Dill comes to Maycomb. During the summer Dill causes trouble and comes up with good ways of hiding what the three of them are talking about. My favorite part of the novel so far is when Dill covers up the fact that they were in the Radleys’ yard, with the excuse that they were playing strip poker by the pond. Dill reminds me of how I was when I was a child. I would make up stories and lie to get myself out of trouble, but what little kid didn’t?
I think the children are consumed with Boo because they were curious about what actually happened to him as a child. I feel that they want to get to know Boo a little better because of the way that he was treated as a child. They just want to let him know that they won’t hurt him and they want to be his friend.
The only story that is told I’m my area is that some of the older and abandoned houses are either haunted or possessed. I believe some of these because I actually live in one of the “haunted” houses. I find it kind of neat because once and a while things may go missing or our radios and TVs turn on by themselves. We even came home one day and our shower had been turned on while we were out.
In the last few chapters I have gotten the impression that Boo Radley likes to have fun because of the laughing in the house after Scout hit the doorstep in the tire. I think that he wants to socialize with the outside world but his family won’t let him out because they are afraid of the criticism that the rest of the town will dish out.
I think that Harper Lee didn’t like going to school when she was younger. I love school and plan on becoming a teacher and helping other children like school also. Today the education is a bit different from than it was back then, but there are some similarities. The main difference that I found is that they didn’t have to do homework and we do. They had a different teaching system as well. I’m sure there are similarities but I am unable to find one at the moment.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I also think that the humorous part in theses chapters was when he covered up his lie with pretending to plan stripe poker. I also think it's funny when Scout popped out of the tire and Boo was laughing inside his house. My favorite part was when Jem told Scout what he saw when he went to get his jeans back from The Radleys Place, and was telling the story to Scout like if it was super bad , when it really wasn't. I think they are curios about Boo is because they hear him inside, they have a feeling that Boo wants to come out and get friendly with the neighbors but can't. Dill, Scout, and Jem want to know more about Boo and want him to show his face and interact with them. In my area I haven't heard any myths or legends around my area, but near my area like Silver Lake they filmed Amitteville Horror. Which is pretty cool. I think Harper Lee didn't like school because in the book she made the Scout's first grade teacher sort of mean. I feel different when it comes down to education. I love school because everyday I learn something new that might be useful in the future but maybe not. And it's also a place for people to interact and really get to know each other. One difference is that the education provided today is better because it has improved over the years. Kids are getting smarter at a younger age and going to college. A similarity is that we still go in the mornings and get out around 3ish.

  14. Hey, I evaluated your group and I think that your group got a 3 for self-reflection of Learning, 2 for Connections To Novel, Self, and World, and 3 for Contribution To The Learning Community. You could ask more questions, I only saw a few, and make more connections to yourself; maybe that would help in getting the discussion going. Great job everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hey,
So I'm marking your blog and I think you guys are doing a really good job. I am going to give you a 3 for Self-Reflection of Learning because you are doing very well in answering the questions and such in each focus and using personal experiences to explain your points but you need to ASK questions to each other, make a connection and start some discussion. For Connections to Novel, Self, and World I will give you a 3.5 cause I think you are getting deep into the novel, I like the way you all gave examples of real life experiences that sort of relate to the story. And for Contribution to the Learning Community I will give you a 2 because you guys are good at reflecting but I think you need to get some conversation going and ask questions, I try to include at least one in each question that I answer. I think it is well done but you need to get some conversation going, maybe if you have some free time on the computer or something just read what the other people said and answer their questions with your opinions and such.

  16. I think that if someone else other than Scout Narrated the story, it wouldn't be as good. We wouldn't have the opportunity to read about the humor that Scout adds to the story. When she beet up her cousin or ran into the Radley house in the tire, only she could be the one to educate us on the words that were spoken at those times. If an adult told this story, we might not have some of the information about the Radleys that the children have dug up. I feel that even if Jem or Dill narrated it, it wouldn't be as good because they haven't had as many funny moments as Scout has had other than the strip poker excuse to hide the real reason for Jem's missing pants. These are a couple examples/reasons why I think that no one else would be a good narrator for To Kill A Mockingbird. Having a girl Narrate a story adds more emotion into it. A girl lets her feelings go and isn't afraid to show it, while guys don’t usually add as much feeling into what they are writing.

  17. I think if I was Jem or Scout and I had never seen snow I too would have been really excited. Building a snowman is fun and i enjoyed the part where they made one. i wonder how the fire happended at Miss maudie's. I think that maybe Miss Maudie may have done it on purpose. the reason I think she may have done it on purpose is because after the house was gone she seemed kind of excited about it. I think it is funny that Scout does not notice that Boo put a blanket on her. In part 2 of the book I think Boo is going to become a really important character. I like that Atticus is not racist like most people in Maycomb. Someone needed to defend Tom Robinson and it was nice of Atticus to do it because he probably knew everyone was going to call him names and critisize him. Like Scout and Jem i like to decorate our family tree. Like the Finches both sides of my family holds christmas parties. I think it is crazy that Scout and Jem got guns for Christmas they seem a little young. I am glad that uncle jack yelled at Scout for the way she talks. She is saying the things because her peers at school do. Hopefully she realizes she should not say the things she does. Francis seems like a very annoying cousin. He eggs on Scout and getting punched in the face by her is what he deserved. i find it unfair that no one listened to Scout's story thye just jumped to conclusions. when Uncle jack apologizes for what he did to Scout i fell it was the right thing for him to do because he jumped to a conclusion which you should never do. I enjoy when I am reading a book and the name of the book is said in the writing. That happened in the book in ch. 10 when Miss Maudie told Scout how it is a sin to kill a mocking bird. It is funny that the dog Tom Robinson has a full name like a human name. When they were saying he has gone mad I think they meant he had rabbies. I feel bad for Atticus for having to kill the dog. Learning more about Atticus was interesting like he is good at checkers, plays a musical instrument, and can aim a gun really goo. Mrs. Dubose seems like one of those people who is very mean unless you know them personally. Some of the things she said to Scout and Jem was not mature for a women her age. I feel bad when she dies because it seems like Jem and Scout actually started to lik her. When Jem had to read to her for a month for ruining her bush he started out really mad. Even if he did not say it I think he may have started to like her.

  18. Evaluation:
I think you guys are doing an excellent job! You all are showing that you understand the novel a little more each time you blog, and that you guys can share your opinions openly. Each and everyone of you are also relating what you have learned from the novel in your responses too. For the 'self-reflection' portion, I had trouble in the grading. I think that you guys related the book to your lives well; but I gave you guys a three (3). For the 'connections to self, novel, and world' portion; I gave you guys a four (4) because you guys have been sharing life experiences. For the 'contribution to learning' portion, I gave you guys a three (3) because you all gave detailed answers that looks like it took a lot of effort. Also, you all shared your thoughts and opinions on the book. So I think your group did really good.

So far in the novel it's getting way more interesting. It's sad that Miss Maudie's house burnt down and also the Ms. Dubose passed away. I really like this book, I usually don't get to interested in novels but for some reason I can connect well with this one. I want to find out more, and more unexpected things to happen. I think its cute how Dill told Scout that he will always love her and that when he has the money to marry her he will, and how she's happy that she will always have a fiance, and its dill. I was excited for the summer again until Scout got the letter from Dill saying he will be staying in Merdidian with his new dad, and won't be coming that summer which is sad and i feel there won't be as much interest as the summer before. I'm lokking forward to the changes Jem is going through now that he is 12 in other words a pre teen, and how Scout is going to survive the summer without Dill and a changing older brother.

    ReplyDelete
  20. in judging Mrs. Dubose, you must remember what Atticus has told them about her addiction, and her decision to come off the drugs and face her death sober. I wonder if the drugs aren't at least partly responsible for her attitude?

The antagonist in the novel right now is Aunt Alexandra. She comes to live with Jem, Atticus, and Scout and she starts to think she is the boss. Scout is not thrilled that she is there and thinks she is changing Atticus. Jem is one character making Scout look at herself in profound ways. He is older and acting more mature and she is confused and needs to think of things to do by herself. Another character would be Aunt Alexandraon page 137 when she tells Scout she came to get her more interested in clothes and boys. Even though Scout did not answer she was saying how she would never be interested in boys or clothes. I think this was giving Scout a different outlook. Even if she did not express it I think she is eventually going to start to think about things like clothes and boy. To make a good historical fiction first you need to have a good story line. Then you do not need to only talk about the past but give hints. Like in to kill a mocking bird Harper Lee gives hints that it is during the Great Depression withouth going overboard.

I think that the antagonist is Jem and Scout's Aunt Alexandra. I think that Scout's aunt is trying to make her look and act like a lady because she does not approve of how she acts and dresses at the moment. Page 176 has Scout narrating
"When I appeared in the doorway, Aunty would look as if she regretted her request; i was usually mud-splashed or covered with sand."
This states that her aunt didn't like the way that Scout would run around in the dirt like a boy. I can't think of anything that makes a good work of historical fiction at the moment. Do you have any ideas?

Atticus goes away for two weeks and leaves Jem and Scout with Calpurina. Calpurina doesn't know what to do with them that sunday because she goes to her church and they attend their church. Scout told Calpurina that they always behave at their church to not worry. So calpurina just thought of a plan to bring them along. So they all went to Calpurina's church and one they walk in someone told asked Calpurina something rude..but calpurina said they are my company. Calpurina was talking differetnt to the people at church then how she talks with them back home. Calpurina explained to them why and they sort of understood. During Church Reverend Sykes said that all money collected will all go to Helen who can not work because of her husbands mistakes. When they collected all the money the Reverend said this is not even enough for that family “we need at least 10 dollars”. So someone closed the door and didn’t let them out until they had the 10. After church Reverend Sykes tells Jem and Scout that they are welcomed any time. Calpurina was also told Scout and Jem that she taught her son Zeeboo how to read out of a book that Jems and Scouts grand daddy had giving her way back. Later on in the week Aunt Alexendra came out of no were and said that she will be staying there for a bit because she and Atticus believe Scout needs a feminine influence around. Scout said she already had Calpurina but it seemed that was not enough. Later on Atticus arrived and told her that the summer was going to be a hot one so they need her. The neighbors seemd to enjoy her company. Aunt Alexendra tried to convince Scout to come sitt with the girls and talk but everytime she did Scout was really dirty from dirt or sand.

In these chapters Jem has becomes of age. Like all old siblings he does not want to be seen around his younger sibling. When they found Dill Jem knew it was the right thing to do to tell Atticus. When the kids go to save Atticus Jem stood up to Atticus to protect him. Jem knew that if he listened to Atticus, Atticus may have gotten hurt. It was a really grown up thing of Jem to do. The mob scene in Maycomb tells us some things about human nature. Humans are humans. In chapter 16 Atticus states somethinhg "That proves something-that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they're still human. What he is saying is no matter how brutal someone is they will eventually realize they were wrong. People can act mean and be mean but when it comes down to it they know what is right and what is wrong.

For Jem's coming of age, I have come up with the following ideas:
    • Stands up to Atticus
    • He stated that he and Scout should tell Atticus about Dill being there after he ran away
    • Wants to be more independent
    • Tells Scout that she should act more like a lady, like all the other grown ups tell her to do
    • More respect for adults
    • Doesn’t fight back as often

  26. Focus 6
The mocking bird is important because it is a bird that doesn’t do anything to people except sing for them. I think that Arthur and Tom are also considered to be mockingbirds because they are not treated very well due to who they are. Arthur is mistreated because of the stories that were told about his past. The people of Maycomb stay clear of him because they think that he is bad. Tom is a mockingbird because he is on trial for ‘raping’ Mayella Ewell. Everyone else in town think that he is guilty and want to hurt him then he is in the jail cell the night before trial and want to treat him a lesson. He is only treated badly because he is a black man accused of raping a white girl.
I think that an individual in a society is someone who doesn’t pay attention to what others are doing. They do what they want without worrying about what everyone else thinks. When a person is being an individual, they don’t do something just because everyone else is doing or has done it before.
Atticus’ character doesn’t fit the stereotype of a masculine man. He was said to not play football, he doesn’t like violence and he raises his children differently from men we know today. If one of his children has a problem, he tells them that they shouldn’t fight back, but to talk about it. When he found out that dill had run away and came to their house, he told the children that they had to contact Dill’s parents and his aunt to make sure that it was okay that he stayed. The stereotypical man would send him home without question because they have a short temper.
What do you think about this? Do you have any other ideas about why or why not Atticus is a stereotype of a masculine man?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Final post 6
The exploration of the mockingbird sheds light on other elements of the story. I think the whole thing that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird is the same as some of the other things that people have done that are sins. To be an individual in society is just referring to any one person a part of a society. We are all individuals in society. I do not think that Atticus is not the typical guy back in those times. It seems like Atticus is all for women and would probably be for the movement of womens rights. He also reads when most guys would be out doing yard work. So no Atticus does not seem to me to be the typical male.

In chapters 14 and 15 Jem shows his coming of age by telling scou to act more like a girl and by not listening to Atticus when he was told to go home, because he knew that if he left the mob might of hurt Atticus. Even Though he had a feeling he could get in trouble with Atticus since Atticus had asked him to stay at home and go to bed.

I would have to agree with you Shelean, To Kill a Mockingbird is a sin because they do not harm anyone or anything.

I also agree that Atticus is not a typical male because he is not like other men who are jerks and seeks what they believe is best for only them. But Atticus is the type of guy who looks out for people when they are being accused of something, for instance Tom. Tom is being accusmed of rapping a 19 year old girl who is white. First they probably think they will benefit from taking him to court because he is a black man and they will have a better chance because they are white. But with Atticus he is fighting for what is the truth. He's not picking sides because of color but because of whats right and what's wrong. I like Atticus he's also a great dad with Scout and Jem. Atticus is not a sterotype of a masculine man because instead of playing football he sits and reads, he not really like other dads in the neighborhood.

I think that som of the turning points of the novel so far are:
-When Scout starts school and is told that she has been learning everthing wrong so far
-When Dill comes to town for the first time and getting Scout and Jem into further exploring the Boo Radley situation
    -The trial taking place
-when Mayella and her father lying to the court and jury while under oath causeing Tom to be found guilty
-Tom losing the trial becuase the jury rules against him
The biggest turning point in my mind would be the fact that Tom got shot while trying to escape from prison during their excersize period. This is because Atticus didn't get to have more time to further look into the case to prove Tom's innocence. I think that if Atticus had thought about the case a little further, and looked over all the statements and evidence, he would have been able to free Tom.
I think that it was quite upsetting when i read that he was shot. I don't find it fair that they didn't give him a chance in the trial due to the colour of his skin. Mayella was clearly telling lies about what had gone on in the house and Tom's left arm made him unable to give Mayella the shiner on her left eye. Do you think that Tom Robinson was innocent or guilty?

At breakfast Atticus and the kids talked about the previous night. He said a very important quote "that proves something- that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they are still human." the quote by Atticus is saying that the mob is still human and they are not totally brutal. When Scout, Jem, and Dill showed up at the scene the mob let up. Scout, Jem, and Dill talked to Miss Maudie about the trial. She felt it was wrong to watch someone on trial for there life. Jem, Scout, Dill still went to the trial. Scout got lost in the courthouse so the kids could not find a seat. Reverand Skyes saw the kids and had seats for them. People were questoined during the trial. Atticus was asking the same questions to get points across. It seemed that Tom Robinson could not have been the criminal because he has no left arm. The injuries that Heck Tate described could not have been done by someone with no left arm. When Tom was asked questions he came off as a nice guy with good manors. Mayella Ewell seemed afraid when she testified. I think that her father did this to her and threatened her if she told the truth. The judge and everyone decides to try and end the trial in the afternoon.

In these chapters Atticus is Tom's lawyer for the case of Tom rapping a 19 year old girl. In the trial it seems to me that Tom is not guilty but because if he were to lie he couldnt seem that calm. I agree that maybe her father told her to lie. And to blame it on Tom just because he is black. When she was getting asked questions she was getting nervious and before she got questioned she started crying because she didn't want Atticus to question her as hard and he did for the other people. I truly believe that Tom Robinson is innocent.

I think that we have reached the climax of the novel. It seems that everything is starting to happen. The trial has started and all the important elements are staring to unfold. Atticus questions four witnesses: Heck Tate, Bob Ewell, Mayella Ewell, and Tom Robinson. Heck Tate describes what he saw and all that he knows. He describes all her injuries by how he saw them. Bob blames Tom and makes him seem like a horrible man. Atticus makes Bob write his name and he is left handed. the side that the injuries were on. Mayella cries and is very nervous. She thinks that Atticus is making fun of her. Tom says how Mayella asked him for help a handful of times. He gave her the help and did nothing wrong. He did say that she cornered him and kissed him against his will. Atticus seems to be a good lawyer and asked good questions and got the the point.

Major points in the novel so far:
    - Tom Robinson is accused of a rap.
    - Atticus is defending a "nigger"
    - The trial is going on and everyone who is everyone is watching the trial
    - Mayella gets very nervious when Atticus asks her all the question that she even cries because she's afriad that he'll quetion her hard.
    - Atticus makes good points that Tom is innocent.

Seems to me that Atticus is on a roll to winning the case, to me it makes sense that he is innocent and Mayella and her father are lying big time.

Today, social injustice is still a very relevant thing as it was in To Kill a Mockingbird with how Harper Lee showed it. Kids usually reflect how their parents act, and in a way turn into them when they grow up. For example, in To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout in someway does not have her own chances to give her own opinion and be herself because Atticus has his own ways of bringing her up and raising her, and he believes this is the correct way to do so. Even though Scout doesnt always believe what he says is right, Scout will later realize that truly what Atticus says is the best for Scout.

I have witnessed personal hyprocritcy when it comes to high school. Sometimes some people dont get the same treatment as others just because they arent dressed the same as someone or does the same things as other people. Scout also witnesses this with Tom Robinson. Just because Tom is a "nigger", Tom gets treated very unfair during the trial as he was accused guilty because of his color. Today in age, this happens all the time whether it is racism, or even over religion. Scout realizes during Tom's trial that it really is a huge deal, and can cause the loss of ones life.

Harper Lee's theme of social injustice in the story is still very much relevant today. Although not as many people have prejudice feelings as they did back in the day there are still a select few who have prjudice feelings. I see to much racism in my community. A lot of farmers go to my school and sorry to say but it seems like a lot of farmers have prejudice feelings. I think people just need to face that they are no better than anyone else. The U.S. is now run under a black president. To me that is a step in the right direction. That could help lower the prejudice in our country and i hope it does. It is sad hearing kids say how they hate Barack Obama and if they have a good reason that is fine but when they say because he is black that is wrong. I wish people would quit having all these prejudice feelings. I am sure that i have had some instanses of personal hypocrisy but I do not recall a specific instant.

Social injustice in the story is relevant today because kids today and even adults believe whatever their parents believe is right, because they we raised with them and believe they know what's right from wrong. Kids today do that, if there's some arguement they always bring up their parnets " well that's what my mommy and daddy told me, and they know everything".

Yes I would have to agree with John. In high school everyone judges you on everything no matter what. Personal Hypocrisy is not very nice. You would like people to stop acting like this but they won't because some people live for judgements depending on your race or the sytle of your clothing or even on your family. Who hasn't witnessed it? Most likely everyone does each and everyday. Just how Tom got judged right away because he is black, and no one liked or believed black people no matter if it was the truth or a lie. Their are some people who judge and think yeah they did the crime just look at them, and look at their background. Which is wrong because you can't judge a book on its cover. That just makes me mad. Does that make you angry that there is people out their who just can't stop judging people because of thier color or style or even way of living?

I think throught the story we encountered heroes. The heroes were Atticus, Jem, Ms. Dubose, and Boo Radley. Atticus is a hero for standing up and defending Tom i feel he did a very good deed to society. Jem for protecting Scout and always being there for her. Also Jem risked his life at the end of the story to protect Scout which resulted with a broken arm. To me Ms. Dubose is a hero for dying morphine free. I am sure that was a very difficult thing for her to over come but she did. The last hero and probably the biggest hero is Boo Radley. The kids thought he was some scary guy. Throught the book the kids fear him. In the end he helps save the kids from Bob Ewell. If I were Jem or Scout and some guy who I felt was a very scary person saved my life that would probably be my hero.

I believe that Atticus Finch is the most heroic, because no matter what the problem is, Atticus always tries to make the outcome better. And Atticus doesn't give up right away. It was a brave thing and a very sweet thing to stick up for Tom in the trial. He fought for what he believed is right. And for a white man to defend a black man back in the day was rather odd. I also believe that Atticus is the most heroic because the way he brings up his kids, he's completely honest and does the right thing. he's not two faced at all. Over all he's the main guy in the book who was the most fun to keep reading about.
