  6. Impressions of Maycomb:
Maycomb seems like the type of town where everybody communicates with each other. The Radley's try to isolate themselves from everyone else by keeping quiet. By seperating themselves from the rest of the town they become outsiders and the main topic of conversation. The people of Maycomb seem to dislike the Radley's, but still respect them. (When Mr. Radley tells the judge that he will punish Boo accordingly, the judge trusts him to do so.)
Now days when someone doesn’t want to interact with other people we allow them to have their privacy. Why did people look down on the families who wanted their lives to remain private?

    Social issues:
-People in this time were very close to each other. When a family didn't become involved with the rest of the town, they were looked down on. Privacy was not respected.
-Black people didn't comment on the ways of white people. (Calpurnia rarely commented on whites.) This is horrible because every person should be entitled to their own opinion, whether they are white or black.
-Teachers felt that only they could supply children with the appropriate teaching. Scout is smart for her age because Atticus and Calpurnia taught her to read and write. She should not be punished for learning outside the classroom.
These issues are based on the common ways of people. Anything that is different from the common way is looked down on. Who decided that some people are considered superior to others based on their race, intelligence, gender, status, etc.?

    Predictions about Boo Radley:
Boo Radley seems like a scary, mysterious character who causes trouble. I think Boo Radley will eventually come out of his ‘prison.’ The town people will probably judge him based on their superstitions, just like black people were judged based on the color of their skin. I think Boo is probably not as bad as some of Scout’s superstitions. Rumours can change the appearance of a person.
What do you think about Boo Radley?

    Outsiders:
An outsider is someone who doesn’t seem to fit in with their surroundings- whether it be culture, personality, race, etc. Some people are outsiders by choice. They choose to isolate themselves from others for emotional reasons. Other people are outsiders because the majority of people see them as “different” from the group. These people are isolated for being unique. Often they are good people who have been overlooked because of one “flaw.”
A lot of people become outsiders in their lives because of what others think about them. A common way is established. If you are different then you are isolated. Who decides what is socially acceptable and what is not?

  7. Extend Focus # 1-
Chapter #1- "The Radley's, welcome anywhere in town, kept to themselves, a predilection unforgivable in Maycomb" (page 11).
This quote is important because it causes the events that follow. Since the Radley's keep to themselves, they are looked down upon. This causes the superstitions of the children.
Chapter #2- "As i read the alphabet a faint line appeared between her eyebrows....she discovered that I was literate and looked at me with more than faint distaste" (page 22).
This quote shows that Miss Caroline thinks that only she is fit to teach Scout. I don't think it is right that her dad and Calpurnia can't teach her to read and write.
Chapter #3- " Yo' folks might be better'n the Cunninghams but it don't count for nothin' the way your're disgracin' 'em- if you can't act fit to eat at the table you can just set here and eat in the kitchen" (page 32).
This quote shows both Atticus and Calpurnia's views on other people. They respect all people no matter what culture or background they have. That was rare at this time.

  8. Humorous Tone/ Connections on childhood:
I think it was funny when Jem lost his pants and showed up in front of the Radley yard without them. It was even more hilarious when Dill said that Jem lost his pants in a game of strip poker.

This reminds me of when I was a kid because whenever I got in trouble I made up excuses. Do you have any funny stories from when you were a kid?

    Boo Radley Obsession:
The children are so obsessed with Boo because he is something different and thinking about him passes the time. Boo Radley is different from the rest of the people in Maycomb. For this reason, the children are very interested in him. When I was little, my friends and I would sneak around a “haunted house” on a hill at the end of my driveway. We used to spend a lot of time peaking into the boarded up windows, knocking on the door and running away. When you are little you have a big imagination. This reminds me of how the children are obsessed with Boo Radley. Jem thinks Boo died and they stuck him up the chimney. Scout and Ms. Maudie think that Boo still lives in the house to this day.

Are there any mysterious stories of people in your town?

    Education:
I think Harper Lee is unhappy about the education system in her day. She seems like a very intelligent girl, who was not pushed to her full potential. Education is different in modern day. Students are usually pushed farther and to extend their previous knowledge. I think that the things we learn in school teach us many things about life in general.
    What do you think?

    Extend: Courage vs. Cowardice

Atticus is a very courageous character in the novel. He believes in equality, which was not seen by most people in that time. He is brave to have a black cook that he pays and respects. People may judge him on his involvement with blacks.
Calpurnia is a brave women. She is very involved with whites, even though it could backfire on her.
Jem is shown as brave because he never turns down a dare.
The book shows courage as a good quality. It represents all the people who stood up to fight for their rights in the United States.
I think the bravest character is Atticus because he follows his heart no matter what other people think.
Most characters in this book act bravely. The character who acts the most cowardly is probably Scout. She thinks she is more superior to the Radley's and other families who are not as fortunate as her. She doesn't want to interact with the "wrong kind of people." I think this behaviour is cowardly because she is too afraid of what others might say if she were to associate with these people.
What are your opinions on Scout?

  11. Narration/ Perspective:
I really like Scout narrating the novel because she speaks her opinion. She is not afraid to be herself. I think the story would be really good if it were told by Boo Radley. His perspective of people is probably a lot different from that of Scout. Boo probably feels isolated from the world and would tell the story like an outsider. His views would be a lot like that of a black person in this time. It might be interesting to see what Miss Caroline thinks of Maycomb, coming from a different town. Who would you like to see narrate the story? Harper Lee probably tells the story from an adult perspective, narrated from a child because adults understand the “big picture” better then children. I think Harper Lee is successful in choosing this perspective because it gives the reader a chance to think about a child’s view in this time. This book connects to many different people in several different ways because of the different perspectives Scout has. If you can relate to the perspective, you understand and enjoy the book more. As an adult, Scout can look back on her childhood and reflect on the events that happened. This gives her the chance to comment on how things turned out and what she would have done differently. Harper Lee’s perspective makes the reader look back on their own childhood and compare their own thoughts to that of the characters in the book. Do you think this perspective was a good choice for the novel? I think a successful historical fiction tells the facts of history, but puts an interesting perspective on the past. The book is far better when you can relate to history.

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it"
You can’t understand the opinions of a person unless you have lived their life. Atticus wants Scout to look at issues as if she were the other person. I think this is an important part of the novel because if people were to respect other’s opinions they might actually understand their point of view. This is a major issue in this time because people are so focussed on what they believe and they forget to consider other people’s opinions. Do you agree with this quote? Have you ever judged a person, but once you got to know them you changed your opinions of them?

    Joline--*

    ReplyDelete
  12. I think Calpurnia & Boo would be good characters to look at. What characters would you guys like to do?

    • The antagonist of the novel could be many different people or things. I picked two main antagonists:
    1) Aunt Alexandria works against Scout and makes her life difficult. She doesn’t understand Scout’s opinions and tries to turn her into a “perfect” child. Aunt Alexandria seems to have a great influence on Atticus. Even when Atticus doesn’t agree with her, he still does what she says. What is your opinion of Aunt Alexandria? Personally I think she is too controlling and self-obsessed. She is trying to change Scout into something she’s not. Have you ever had someone try to turn you into something that your not?
    2) The racial issues in the story cause many problems f0r Scout and her family. Atticus is representing a black man in court. Many people look down upon Atticus because he respects all races. The town’s people tease and taunt their family because of their involvement with the blacks. I don’t think it’s fair to judge people because they are involved with black people. What is your opinion of this?
    • How are opposing characters forcing Scout to look at herself in profound ways?
Aunt Alexandria tries to change Scout’s personality. She wants Scout to act like a lady and wear dresses. Aunt Alexandria tries to influence Atticus and make him discipline Scout. She thinks that Atticus has raised his children the wrong way. Do you agree with her? Atticus also makes Scout look at herself differently. He tells Scout, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" (36). Atticus wants Scout to consider other people’s point of view. Do you agree with Atticus’ or Scout’s opinion on racial issues?
    • Characters: How do they make a good work of historical fiction?
The characters “make or break” the story. If an author develops strong characters, the audience can better understand the storyline. Character foils show different opinions and make us better understand each person in the story. Each character fits into a certain “group” in society, and represents the opinions within the group. I like how Harper Lee uses many different characters from different “groups” in society to show the opinions of the people regarding the racial issues at this time. Do you think Harper Lee represents all groups of people at this time?

  13. Focus #4 Characters
Hey, here's what I think of Calpurnia and Boo:

Calpurnia is a strong character in the novel. She is a black woman who is very brave because she works for a white family. Calpurnia states her opinions, which is very courageous for a black person. At this time a black person’s opinion was not respected. It is very brave for Calpurnia to say what she thinks when she could get into a lot of trouble for saying something negative about a white person. Do you think Calpurnia is brave or foolish for stating her opinions?
Calpurnia helps Scout behave in a proper way, but doesn’t try to change her personality. Scout learns that it’s okay to be herself, but she should take into account other people’s feelings and opinions. Scout sometimes feels that Calpurnia’s punishments are unfair and speaks her mind. For Example: When Atticus invites Walter Cunningham to stay for dinner, Scout makes fun of the way Walter drowns his meal in syrup. Calpurnia hits Scout and tells her she can’t speak to company that way- no matter who it is. Scout says that one day she’ll go drown herself in a Barker’s Eddy and then Calpurnia would be sorry. Do you think Calpurnia's punishments are unfair to Scout or do you think she's just trying to teach Scout to be polite?
I think as an adult, Scout realizes that Calpurnia was trying to help her become a respectable individual. As the novel goes on, Calpurnia and Atticus teach Scout that all people should be treated equally. Scout learns that people aren’t as bad as they seem once you get to know them. What are your opinions of Calpurnia? Do you feel that she is an important character in the novel? Is Atticus right to let her work and become involved with his family during a time where he will be judged for his involvement with a black person?

Boo Radley is a very mysterious character. His legend intrigues the children of Maycomb. Boo is a major part of the story because he shows how people are isolated when they are considered outsiders. He also shows us how people judge others without knowing any of the facts. His mysterious story makes us curious and foreshadows events to come. How do you think the story might be different without Boo? I don't think the novel would be as good because Boo creates a mysterious vibe and teaches Scout in a different way then the other character.
Scout often reacts to the stories of Boo Radley. She is very scared of Boo and believes he is still alive in the Radley house. An example of one of Scout’s reactions to Boo is when Jem pushes her in the tire and it rolls down into the Radley yard. Scout swears she hears Boo laugh, but she just sits in total shock for a minute. She finally realizes what’s going on and gets up and runs back to Jem. This example shows how Scout is both fascinated and shocked by Boo Radley. Why do you think Boo was laughing at Scout?
Boo helps Scout learn about herself by being kind to her. He puts a blanket around her at the fire and folds and mends Jem’s pants. Boo helps Scout learn how to treat people kindly, even when they don’t treat you well. Boo also helps Scout accept herself for who she is even though some people think she should act differently (Aunt Alexandria wants her to behave like a lady). Boo is a perfect example of someone who is not accepted by society. Scout realizes that it’s okay to be different.
How do you think Boo feels about the children?
How will he contribute to the ending of the story? What is your opinion of Boo Radley?

    Jem’s Coming Of Age
 Sudden change of attitude (new values)
 Starts to spend more time alone (insists that Scout needs to leave him alone and stop pestering him)
     Starts reading the paper
 Feels that he is old enough to make his own decisions (Ex. Jem decides to go out in the middle of the night to check up on his father at the jail)
 Difficult to live with, moody, quick to anger and inconsistent
     Large appetite
 Tries to tell Scout what to do
     “wise”
 Tries to protect Atticus and Scout from harm
     Had a growth spurt

    My Coming of Age
 I think that most teenagers undergo similar changes as they “come of age.” There’s a certain point when we start to grow up and understand parts of the world. Most people become moody and more independent at this stage. We feel more confident in our own decisions and want to control every aspect of our lives. Jem is a typical example of a teenager who is growing up. My “coming of age” moments are very similar to his. I felt more self-reliant and wanted to make decisions for myself.

what does the mob scene tell us about the nature of humans and how they behave? This event leads to a new understanding for Jem. Write a diary entry that Jem would have written later that night. It should reflect the various insights Jem now has into his father, individuality, motivations of the mob and himself.
    Dear Journal,
I experienced a miracle tonight. A mob came by the Maycomb jail to protest against Atticus for defending a black man. I thought the mob would hurt Atticus or set nearby buildings on fire. I was surprised when the mob left peacefully, without any threats. Scout drove the mob away by making Mr. Cunningham see that all people have flaws, but we are still human regardless. I came to a new conclusion about human behaviour tonight. Scout made me realize that even a wicked person can be human on the inside. Each person is fighting their own personal battle that we can’t always see. I think that Mr. Cunningham realized that he had his own flaws. He seen that we didn’t judge him based on his flaws and that people accepted him. Mr. Cunningham saw that Scout was kind and asked that he say, “Hey,” to Walter. The mob was just a bunch of people who were quick to anger, but never really thought about the reasons Atticus is defending Tom. Scout made them think before they made the wrong decisions. For once in my life I was grateful to have her by my side. I think that all people should be treated equally. I now understand why Atticus insists on defending a black man. I am going to support my father in his decision and try to follow his example.

The mockingbird symbolizes the innocence and peace of characters in the book. In the novel, the mockingbird is represented by blacks and other unequal people. They are convicted of crimes and punished even when they are innocent. Tom Robinson was put in jail because he was accused of rape. Whether he truly is innocent or guilty really doesn’t matter in this case. He will be punished regardless if he committed the crime or not because he is black. In Atticus’ opinion it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they are innocent and don’t cause any harm. This is why Atticus is so determined to represent Tom Robinson. He believes that Tom was wrongly accused because of the color of his skin. Atticus doesn’t think it is fair to punish him without first proving him innocent or guilty in a fair trial.

    Character Names- Symbolism
Boo: This name represents his character because it gives a scary impression. “Boo!” is something you say to scare someone. Boo Radley is a mysterious character who frightens the children because of the stories about him.
Scout: This name shows us that Scout is very adventurous. She is very curious and always up for a new expedition.
Jem: This name represents a strong protector, advice giver, and planner. This explanation really suits Jem’s character in the book. He tries to protect Atticus and Scout, gives helpful advice, and plans ahead.
Atticus: This name means father-like. Atticus always puts his kids first. He treats them like adults and teaches them right from wrong. Atticus is a very good father to the children.
Tom Robinson: This name sounds very common. It represents the character in the story because Tom is just an innocent man who was wrongly accused. He is just a common black man who didn’t do anything wrong. Any black person could be accused of a crime just because of their skin color.
Dill: This sounds like a very curious name. It seems to represent a unique character. This name also means faithfulness. Dill represents this name very well in the novel. He is curious and different. He is faithful to Scout (he writes letters to her and says he will marry her someday).

    Individuals in Society:
To be an individual in society you must remain true to yourself. Represent your own opinions and stand up for what you believe in. Many people lose who they are because they are afraid of what others will think about them. To represent yourself as an individual in society, you need to forget what other people think and focus on what you believe in. Don’t judge others because most of the time you will only “skim the surface” (Meaning: You only see part of the truth. You don’t truly understand someone until you put yourself in their position.)

    Stereotypical View of Masculinity:
I think Atticus fits the modern, stereotypical view of masculinity in some ways, but in others he doesn’t. Masculinity is now seen as buff men who have lots of power/control. They don’t let anyone tell them what to do. Atticus is quite the opposite of this. He is intelligent, kind, and stands up for what is right. Atticus lets people push him around sometimes, (Ex. Aunt Alexandria) but never changes his beliefs. Atticus is good at shooting guns, courageous, and is not a coward (Ex. He represents a black man and was willing to go by himself to the jail to protect him). Sometimes Atticus seems much “deeper” then the common view of masculinity. He is kind to every person and can be quite emotional. Atticus has strong beliefs of what is right and keeps his promises.

    Characters Changing Views:
Scout starts to change her views as the story goes on. At the beginning, Scout doesn’t understand why Atticus insists on representing a black man. She doesn’t see how unequally the black population is treated. Scout starts to see the violence towards black people when the mob tries to attack the jail. She realizes that white people feel that they are superior to the blacks. Because it was a black man who was accused of rape, it is believed by the whites to be true. At the trial, Scout sees that it really doesn’t matter if he is truly guilty or innocent because he is black. Therefore Tom Robinson is guilty. I think Scout starts to understand why her father tried so hard to argue Tom’s case. She realizes that he was treated unfairly and disserves to be heard in court. Atticus is the best person to represent Tom and to give him the chance of winning.
Mr. Cunningham also changes his views during the story. At first he is involved in the mob and is racist against the blacks. He agrees with the majority of people and believes that whites are superior to blacks. Mr. Cunningham doesn’t agree with Atticus representing Tom. He believes Tom is guilty, mostly because he is black. When Scout talks to Mr. Cunningham at the mob, she makes him see that all people are human no matter what race they are. He realizes that all people make mistakes and that he shouldn’t judge Tom based on his skin color. Scout treats the Cunningham’s with respect, even though they are poor. Mr. Cunningham learns to give Tom a chance. Just because he is black, doesn’t mean he is guilty.
What other characters change their views as the story progresses? Do you think Scout is old enough to understand what is actually going on during the trial? Do you think Mr. Cunningham will continue to be racist?

I think that the major turning point in the novel is the trial of Tom Robinson. This is when most characters in the novel have to make a choice. They have to choose if they want to go along with the majority of the people or to “go against the grain.” The people of Maycomb have to decide if they want to call Tom guilty because he is black or give him a fair chance. The trial is a life changing event in Maycomb. What do you guys think the main turning point is in the novel?
Another turning point is when the novel switches to Part 2. The second part of the book is all about the racial issues with Tom Robinson, while the first part is about the children’s obsession with Boo Radley.
What are your thoughts on how Atticus represented Tom? I think that he was probably the best person to stand up for Tom and give him a chance at winning the trial.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, there were many huge turning points in the story. The main turning point wat Tom Robinson's trial and how both Jem and Scout reacted to the outcome. Besides Scout and Jem, the other characters in the story also had to make a big decision, and that was what they really did believe in. Scout realized during this trial that sometimes during her time period, everyone is not treated the same. Scout realized that because Tom was African American, he was treated unfairly and accused guilty. Before the trial, Scout never realized anything wrong with the word "nigger" and during the trial realized why it was offensive to say. When Scout sees how Tom Robinson is treated, she realizes how extreme racism can be and changes the way she talks. The trial was a big turning point because this is the point in the story when Scout notices the extent to which racism has reached and stops using "nigger" to describe African Americans.

When Aunt Alexandra moves in with the Finch's, this was another turning point in the book. Alexandra believed that both Jem and Scout needed some feminine teaching in there lives in order for them to mature and age. Scout is not used to having the women influence in the house, and does not like it very much. Scout swears more around her to aggravate Alexandra which causes fighting between the two which then pulls Atticus into it as well. This point in the story is a major turning point because it helps Scout learn to put herself into someone elses shoes which Atticus had been trying to teach Scout throughout the book starting with her first day of school.

"Atticus had used every tool available to free men to save Tom Robinson, but in the secret courts of men's hearts Atticus had no case. Tom was a dead man the minute Mayella Ewell opened her mouth and screamed" (323).

It is sad to think that Atticus really doesn’t have a chance in this case. As soon as Mayella Ewell testifies against Tom, he is in the wrong. A white person’s statement is always taken over the black person’s. Only Atticus could have even made the jury consider his side in this case. For that, he is successful.

Harper Lee's theme of social injustice is still relevant today. Some people feel as though they are superior to others based on their skin color, gender, culture, personality, occupation, etc. Obviously we have developed some rights and laws that prohibit racism and inequality among people, but that is not to say that these issues have been completely eliminated in society. The older generations pass on their views to the younger ones and these problems continue. If a man who has children is hateful of a certain race, it is likely that those children will learn to hate that race. This is what makes it difficult to change old habits. We need to continue to speak out against racism and inequality in order to completely eliminate them from our world.

I think people believe they are more superior to certain races because they have seen the way one person of that group acts and make the assumption that all people of that race will act the same. This is stereotyping people. We can’t break people into groups and judge them. Not every person in a stereotypical is the exact same. In order to break these stereotypes, we need to pass on the message to as many people as we can that it is wrong to judge people based on what we see. Everyone disserves a chance.

I think the trial of Tom Robinson was the biggest turning point in the book.Atticus did a really good job of defending tom. Sience it took such a long time to decide the verdict I thought for sure that they were going to let tom go.I guess that they werent going to give tom a chance because he was black because if he was white he totally would of gotten let go

I agree with the majority of people. Atticus is definetly the main hero in the story. He is the only person who could make so many people even consider the innocence of Tom Robinson. While many other people chose to believe the Ewells based on their race, Atticus defended a black man. Throughout the whole novel while various people judge Atticus based on his respect for the blacks, he stands by what he believes in. He treats every person with respect, regardless of race, gender, or wealth. In this time period, it is amazing to see someone who is as commited to his opinions as Atticus is. He teaches his children the same morals, even though they are condemned for their beliefs. Atticus is responisble for many people considering a black person’s opinion. Without people like Atticus, our world would still be as racist as people were in the 1930s.

Without people like Atticus, our world would still be as racist as people were in the 1930s.

Maycomb is a town where everybody knows each other. Its kind of a mix of old fasiond people like the cunninghams and the more modern people like the finches. The radileys seem like they want to be left alone. They dont really like to be involved in anything.

I think the kids are so intrested in Boo Radily because they dont mutch about him. He never comes out of the house so they play games of what they think it would be like in that house. Boo's real name is Aurther Radiley. He stabed his dad in the leg with sissores. Harpor ley thinks education is importent. Education back then is way better then it is today. Education back then and now is diffrent because back then some kids had to work then go to school and now you have to go to school

I dill was the narrator it would probably be a lot different because he is only there every other week. If boo was the narrator it would start off with him stabbing his dad in the leg. It would probably have him sneaking out at night putting stuff in the tree and having him looking out the window at the kids.

The mob scene is importat because it showes how mutch of an impact scout puts on people. Atticus wants tom to win the trial so mutch that he is willing to sit outside the jail without any weapons or any thing and try to deflest mobs. Scout just talks to Mr cunningham as an innoscent child and she makes him thing about how mutch walter means to him. Being an indivigual in sociey means to not conforem in the main stream in society. Yes, society does force citesent to take unpopular, but moral, stance in order to promote change. Come of age means to becomb an adult.

The mockingbird symbolises the good people in this book.Boo: because lots of people are scared of him. Dill: because hes a small guy with a big name. Scout: she like to go on adventures.

Scout really changes her view through the story. In the beginning of the story she does not really notis how match black people get disrespected. Towards the end at the jail with the big mob she really starts seeing how much violence black people have to take.

As soon as mayella started to testify atticus dident have a chance to win. At least he did everything he could to save tom. He made a really good argument that took the jury by surprise but they couldent just free a black man. Jem stars going into this stage where he just wants to be alone. so when he says he hates hitler hes being rude because hes disrespesting everybody at home.

Tom is a charicter in this book thats like a mockingbird because he would stop what ever he was doing and help mayella. Aticus is another charicter that is like a mocking bird because he alwase helps out when help is needed. Scout learned that black people and white people should be treated the same. The novel tells us that black people and white people dident get along very well back then. Now black people and white people get along but there is still people out there that think white people are better then black people.
