  4. I think that Maycomb is a quiet little town, not unlike delisle. i make the connection that something life changing is going to happen!

  5. One social issue is that there was extreme prejudice towards African-Americans.

  6. Boo Radley will save the kids from danger, i assume

  7. Never mind on the last blog. Lets get to business.

    1. Maycomb seems like a run down county. The town looked like Carbon Hill, Alabama during the Great Depression.

    2. "Scout's" new teacher is intiminated by the some what intillectual children; Many of the children are poor; There are many rumors about the Boo Radley Place.

    3. He might assault "Scout", Jem, and Dill.

    4. Boo is a phsycotic, killing, assaulting, creepy man.

    5. Outsider- to be newly introduced in an area, or to not fit in. Some people are considered outsiders because they might not be liked, cant fit in, came from out of town, or you have done something wrong and then you have been outcasted and ignored.

  8. 1. Calpernia actually likes Scout now, The deal about reading between Scout and Atticus, And that the kids do a skit about the Boo Radley Story/ I can some what connect with this because me and my parents make deals between one and another.

    2. The kids want to know more and the truth about the Boo Radley Story. I can relate to this because I would want to know more about a curious story.
    (more will come later)

  9. To be continued...

    3. Here in Burlington, Wisconson there aren't really any myths around here, except for those common every where myths like Santa and all that. ha ha.

    4. We have just learned that Boo's name is really Arthur, He was polite to Miss Rachel, and he went mad from being cooped up in that house. Boo is now hard to describe now because with the positive detail, so now I'm in a rut in a decission whether Boo is good or not.

    5. Harper Lee thought that education seemed to be unfair considering Scout represents her. Its not similar to my education because our system is cooperative. Education is very different today than in the past in Maycomb because in 1st grade we learned and knew how to read and we actualy progress in education. (And we had pre-k and kindergarden) :)

  10. The more you read TKAM, the more you realize that Harper Lee did not put anything into the book that she didn't have strong feelings about. What do you think she was trying to say about the education system? (and not just about kindergarden, etc.)

Any comments on courage and cowardice?

  11. Heyy guys :) I marked your focus one discussion and I must say I'm impressed on your answers! Good job boys! :p I gave you guys a 3 on Self-reflection of learning, a 3 on Connections To Novel, Self, and World, and a 3 on Contribution to the Learning Community. Only thing you might want to consider is trying to put all your answers in one blog... and Tuckin needs to write his name in the profile thing so he doesn't come up as "anonymous" Haha good work Tuckin and Travis!! :p :)

  12. Hey! It looks like Travis has got some interesting things to say about the book. Justin maybe you should follow his example. (haha.)I can't really mark your group when you don't got anything to say.

  13. The novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird”, highlights several instances of courage and heroism. For example, when scout punches her cousin for making fun of her dad when he was being made fun of is an example of courage.
Even the courage to change is an important theme throughout the novel. For example, when Miss Dubose gave up her morphine addiction, is an example of the courage to change. Atticus states that "'I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what'. She wanted to prove that she had the courage to bear through the pain.

  15. Yes, I agree with ya Justin. Scout is trying to compair strength and courage. As you can see, courage is another word for bravery and to stand up for something important. While strength is to control something with brute power to were you have no proud judgement in this mater. On the other hand, cowardice is a harder object to see. Scout see's that turning your back on a bad situation is cowardly. What she doesn't recognize is that it is the right thing to do. The only way that courage and cowardice go together is this...
“Sometimes being a coward is the couageous way to go.”

Sorry for being serious and emotional sounding like that. Ha ha. :) See ya

  17. Hi I am Jason G. and I am a 15 years old and I am a student enrolled in Central High School in Salem, Wisoconsin. I was seeing the disscusion that you two were having about heroism and courage and I would like to add to this discussion. One person that I believe is very brave and has the most courage in this novel is Atticus. I believe he is the most couragous because Atticus has the guts to defend an African American in a trial for rape during this time. In order for this to be done Atticus probably came to the conclusion that he would probably be hated throughout the town, which he was, and his kids, Scout and Jem, would also take a lot of abuse. Atticus also shows heroism as well because when the trial ends, he is confronted by Bob Ewell and Bob threatens his life and spits in Atticus's face. But the one thing that really stood out to me when I read this was that Atticus is a hero and can be an excellent mentor / role model because he isn't an instigator and he knows how to walk away from a bad situation just as someone said earlier in this blog.

  18. Focus 3

When Harper Lee made a child as a narrative it made things understandable. Since Scout is the “I” in the story, she acts as Harper Lee in this era. As I read some of the other group's answers I noticed that the girls care more about “touch feely” events than guys. Harper Lee made this historical book fiction to make it seem more interesting to more readers, and trust me her plan work.

  19. Since antagonist is the bad guy in the story, I would have to say that person would have to be Boo. Alexandra wants her to be a lady, and she is making Scout do activities that she normaly doesn't do. Accurate history and added non real characters makes a good story

  20. Sorry. My last post was Focus #4

  21. Focus 5

    Jems diary,

I have seen many things tonight from violence to understanding others. Scout too have noticed some of these. I now know what Atticus has been going through; many hard ships and dangers for defending the colored. I have understood the meanings of Atticus's moralities. Scout has grown a bit, making Mr. Cunningham know we're good to his boy. She and I have made Atticus proud by our realizations and our maturity. I feel that by saving Atticus has made him felt that he has done good.

  22. Focus 6

Atticus is a lawer that isn't very stereotypical. He symbolizes responsibility and methodism.

Jem is now begining to understand the way life is. He follows His dads foot steps.

Scout is a young hyper child. She is the "I" in the story and is begining to understand Atticus's quotes.

Dill is all entwined in the Radley legend.

  23. Focus 9

There were many turning points in these chapters. One would be when Bob E. spat in Atticus's face. We now know that Mr. Raymond isn't a bad guy. During the trial Scout is beging to understand many things. The trial showed that many people are racist.

  24. The "Focus 9" is really Focus 8, sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Focus 7

After the trial, both Atticus and Jem are mortified that the jury found Tom guilty. Jem thought that the jury was racist to find the innocent guilty. Atticus replied in a depressed agreement. Everyone is surprised that Atticus reacted in a negative, depressing way.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Focus 9

Harper Lee's social injustice is still here today because the innocent are called guilty too sometimes. Though the racism and hypocritical court houses are at a minimal. I've seen this one boy who told his sister not to bother the pets but the boy continued it. Another time was a man in the bowling alley bar telling that he and his friends shouldn't drink heavily but the man chugged his alcohol. People act this way because they don't know what to do. Sometimes they could be self centered, or both.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Focus 10

To begin with, I think that Jem was the heroic one in these chapters. Sometimes to be heroic you have to be intellectual, like when Jem knew they were under the oak tree because its cool and moiste. Jem was brave and heroic when he saved Scout from the person that was trying to kill them. He did that by pulling Scout out of the way and ripping the perpetrator off of her. So Jem was the heroic person in chapters 28-29.

In chapters 30-31 both Scout and Boo were hiroic because Scout met Boo and brought him home. Boo was heroic because he came out of his house and saved Scout and Jem.

  28. focus 10

The most heroic person in the book would be Boo Radley. He did not do many heroic things but he did the most important by saving the children from Bob Ewell. If Boo hadn't gone and rescued them that night the book would have been drastically changed.
