  7. Chapters 1-3

Well, Maycomb is a pretty laid back small town, just like the town a lot of us live in. Pretty much everyone knows each other. However, the part where when Jem said that Scout couldn't play with her when they were at school was one of the social issues I noticed in these chapters. Jem said that school was a lot "different". Boo Radley is one strange character. He never sets a foot outside. Also, he is all Scout and Jem think about. He could get involved in the story any way but, I think that Jem and Scout might go in the house and find Boo. Maybe they will be friends, or maybe they will find him being abused by his relatives. Hmm, to be an outsider... I think that being an outsider is when a person is different and doesn't quite fit in with the normal crowd. And yes, The Cunningham's defiantly fall into that category. I guess you could say that they haven't found there niche in the local community. I think they will find their place by the end of the book. Well, thats my take on chapters one through three. Overall, I hope this book gets a little more exciting because it started off pretty slow.

  8. I can see it's hard to get into the book if your not enjoying the first few chapters, but maybe you could have made more connections not only to yourself but to the world.Ask more questions, question eachothers views, thoughts or opinions. The more you reflect the deeper your discussions will get. But keep up the good work.

    Taylor.

  9. Hey i'm going to jump in on this, my name is Josh and i live in Wisconsin. I agree that maycomb is a really laid back town, and the characters all seem to know everyone. Boo Radley is the dark mysteroius character, but he proves to be the hero in the end. The book was good but i really like the ending. thats all for now.

  10. The antagonist in this novel is Jem.I think once Scout and Jem attend Calpurnia’s church, and met aunt Alexandra it had changed there lives a little bit . Alexandra’s goal is to try to shape Scout into something shes not.
In these couple chapters the characters make Scout look at herself differently. Scout realizes that jems always being mean and moddy to her. Her Aunt also lectures Scout on the way she dresses and says in a few years you will only care about clothes and boys.I also think they wanted to change Jean because she wasn't dressing right for a girl and wanted to change her to fit in with the other girls.

  11. Chapters 4-7 final post

In these chapters, Scout and jem find a lot of thing in the tree, like a watch, lots of gum, and some yarn. The kids are really interested in boo because they havent seen him, and he never comes out of the house. School is looking up for Scout like Jem said it would. Thats what I have to say about these chapters. It is starting to pick up a bit.

Dear Diary, Today was most peculiar I saw my father sneak out of our house and go and sit in front of the jail. I watched him for a while to see what he was doing when a bunch of men came and surrounded him. I was very concerned with my father so I ran in there to see what was going on. The men told him to make me leave so I did, but I left with my father. I’m very worried about him, he’s been acting very awkward lately and I don’t know why. I don’t know why but I’m just really worried about everyone lately and I can’t help it.

  13. Hi, My name is Matt and I am a student in Miss.Johnson's english ten honors class. One of the things that I noticed was that when aunt Alexandra came to their home, she did not spend alot of time with the children. For the first month or so, the children rarely saw thier aunt exept before bed and around mealtimes. She was out socializing with members of the comunity and joining many different clubs and social groups. She likes to boss people around and came to maycomb to boost the families image. She feels the need to do this because Atticus is defending a negro and letting his children run wild.
Yes, she does want to turn scout into a lady but, she also wants make sure that the Finch family is not the laughing stock of Maycomb.

  15. Chapters 8-11

In Chapters 8-11, Tom Robinson, the dog, is going crazy. The cop was going to shoot the dog but he made Atticus do it. Atticus is the best shot in the tow. However he didn't want his kids to know because he thought that he would think of him differently. Atticus is also getting older. Everytime Jem wants to takel him he says that hes getting to old for that. He is nearly fifty. Atticus is also blind in his left eye. Scout likes to wander more. He goes to see Boo's house more often. Mrs. Dubose is also a morphine addict and she dies at the end of the chapter.

  16. Chapters 12-13

The Antagonest of this novel is Aunt Alexandra because she comes to the house and wants to change their lifestyle. She decided that Scout wasen't girly enough so she wants to change that. Alexandra is exeptionaly mean to Calpurnia. The moment she walked in the door she rudely Asked her to carry up her bags.

  17. The major events in this novel are….
    - Scout starts school
    - Miss Maudies house catches on fire
    - Boo Radley puts a blanket on scout to warm her up when she wasn’t looking
    - When the gangsta mob guys come to see atticus outside of the town jail

The turning point in the novel is the trial. I think this is the turning point because the trial explains all the questions most people have been wondering throughout the book. The trial is also real intense. Theres lots of good questions and then Atticus goes all lawyer crazy and starts asking questions and it almost sounded like he was making people scared. At that point in the novel is where I really started liking it.

In Chapters 19-24, The trial has been my favoritepart of the book. Atticus does everything he can to save Tom but the all white jury wrongfully denies Tom the right to be free and outof jail. I like how Scout Jem and Dill sneak into the Court room just at the right time So atticus does't see them. The way the Jury treated Tom was wrong and bad. The judge didn't even take the trial seriously. He sat smoking a cigar. This book is getting better and better.

  19. Good points Brandon. How did the jury wrongfully treat Tom? Also I don't believe judge Taylor acted the way he did because he didn't care about the trial; I believe he acted that way because that's just who he is. My statement is supported because in the beginning of the book it is Judge Taylor who wants Atticus to take the case. He does this because he wants to get the best lawyer for Tom to help an innocent man go free. I feel the trial is the main turning point of the book because Lee makes it seem to the reader that the trial is going perfectly and that Tom will go free, but as we find out Tom is actually found guilty. What are your thoughts on this? How would the book have ended if Tom was found innocent?

  20. Hey guys! My name is Jasmin and I am from Ms. Johnson's other English class. I'd like to add that, to me, the major turning point of To Kill A Mockingbird was Tom Robinson's conviction. Not only because it was intense and built up excitement, but because it really ties up all of the themes. After he was found guilty, Jem's character really begins to unfold, and you get to see the "comming of age" theme of this book. The way Scout and Jem treat, not only Atticus, but the rest of Maycomb as a whole is a real eye opener. If this would have been a fairy tale ending, I don't think the Finch children would have really understood their father's message, and throughout the whole book, Attiuc tries to teach his children equality.

Hey, I'm Cody Lane. I'm in Ms. Johnson's English. I agree with Jasmine that the conviction of Tom Robinson was the final major turning point in the book. Before this point, Jem and Scout were just innocent kids growing up learning important lessons along the way. They learned what it took to be a person that had morals they exhibited in everyday life. Atticus taught them about such things by being an example of living, everyday, the lessons he taught Jem and Scout. The kids learned what it meant to not be prejudiced, to be modest and to be able to put yourself in other people's skin and see the world from their point of view. The trial revealed to the Finch children that the world was full of hatred and prejudice. The event showed that, while some brave few fight for equality and moral fairness in everything, there will always be people who try to destroy the good and fairness that some people work so hard to create. The trial taught Scout the one last lesson of adulthood. The world consists of more than just good people wanting to create a fair world and where everyone is equal. Scout learned that people were full of hatred and prejudice. She learned they had the abiltiy to commit acts that were not fair and create injustices that destroy the hope of people looking for a fair and equal world.

  22. Focus 8

Hi I'm Rachel V from Johnson's honors class. The major turning point at this part in the book, I believe as well, is the conviction of Tom Robinson. This part really develops Jem's and Scout's characters. Their reactions to the trail show you their perspective on things. Jem, for example, is more emotionally affected by the trial. Whereas Scout, looks at the trail more as "black and white". She realizes that Maycomb is a racist society and there is nothing or no case that is going to change how the people's prejudices affect their views of a person of a particular race.

  23. Focus 9 Final post

Harper Lee's theme of injustice is still around because some people still think that others are inferior when they are clearly just like any other human. People behave this way because some parents or other idols to childeren teach them to be racist and hateful to others. One time, at a theme park I saw an african american worker not let anyone else on the ride but african americans. So all the white people had to stand in line for an extra amount of time. Luckly someone told the manager and she was fired on the spot. Actions like these are still occoring everyday and they are horrible.

  24. The most heroic character in the book was Scout. She was the most heroic because she was the littlest but she would do anything for anyone. She ran straight into that mob that had surrounded Atticus and didn’t even get scared. She really wanted to look out for everyone and even go along on dangerous adventures to the Radley house. So for being the youngest in the book I would say she is the most heroic for her size and age.
