  1. Hi, I'm Carissa.
I am in grade 11 at Delisle Composite School. I am very involved in my school. I am the SRC co-vice president with my best friend. Also, i am active in plenty of sports available at my school. I play Soccer, Volleyball, and Basketball. I used to play hockey as well, but Basketball takes too much of my time. On my time after school I work, hang out with my friends, or I am actively engaged in a sport of mine.
On occasions I get to hang out with my family. There is six kids in my family. I have two step sisters which are already moved out of the house and one is married. I also have two step-sisters which live with there mom, and one step brother who lives on his own. So at the moment I am the only child in the house with my parents and my puppy name "willi".
I am very excited to meet both of you, and do this blogging project with you both!

  9. Have any of you been to Canada?
I have been to the States quite a bit actually. My grandparents go to Arizona every winter because they have a house there. So i have drove down to AZ plenty of times. So I have been to quite a few places down there :p.
A unique thing about Saskatchewan is that during winter when it is a certain degree the buses dont run because it is too cold out and it can be very dangerous if something happened like the bus broke down. ( The children would freeze to death). That is an up to Delisle. Sometimes we dont have school for a week because the buses dont run so we just stay at home and hang out with friends.
Do any of you have any vacations or trips anywhere this winter?
In April i am going on a travel club trip to Portugal, Spain, Italy, And France. I am very excited for it.

  10. Thanks, that does help.
I just got done reading chapters 1-3. Maycomb seems like the town where everyone knows everything about each other. It's kind of weird in a way because if you look at it, how much would you like your neighbors knowing everything about you and your family? I like Scout. She has a back bone. Boo Radley seems scary. I love how they make the whole walking by his house thing such a dramatic event. Being an outsider is like being out of the loop. Being someone who doesnt know everything that everyone else does. So someone who doesnt live in Maycomb might not know anything about what goes on in Maycomb.

-And no, I have never been to Canada, but I would love to check it out (:

    ReplyDelete
  11. Maycomb kind of seems like the town that i live in because on different holidays we all just swap different presents. In the sory everybody is sociable with eachother. All of the chracters seem to have there own different characteristics about themselves. I've actually never been to Canada but me and my family have always talked about going up there to go fishing. I love to fish. Michael

  12. I read chapters 1-3. Maycomb seems like a town like Delisle( My town). Everyone in Delisle knows everything about everyone. Rumours are also spread very easy here. Also, most people in Delisle are related so everyone is always together. Maycomb and Delisle seem to have a lot in common.
Boo Radley seems like he is a lonely person. He has no friend which i think makes him seem like a weird person because he has no one to hang out with so he just hangs out at home and doesn't go out. It seems like people judge him for what they hear about him by not even knowing anything about him.
An outsider is someone whom has nothing to do with anyone or anything. Boo seems like an outsider because he has no one to look back on and he is just always by himself and outside of everything that is going on around him.
Scout is a very strong character in this book so far. She is not afraid to stick up for what she believes.
    :)

  13. Extend:
Chapter 1: "The misery of that began many years before jem and i were born." - This quote I think is significat because it shows that the Radleys are natives to the town and shows how the town is so small and sets the setting of the town up.
Chapter 2: " Miss Caroline told me to tell my father not to teach me anymore, it will interfere with my reading." - This quote is significant to me because it sets the time of the story, and shows how strict the teacher is. It shows that in this time people were unable to be independant and had to be exactly like everyone else.
Chapter 3:"cooties." - I think that saying is quite significant in this chapter. This also shows how people have to be exactly like one another and how the teacher judges the kids even if they are too poor to wash there hair. Now a days that would NEVER happen, everyone just walks around "greasy" and we can't really do anything about it.

  14. I read Chapter 4-7.
This novel to me seems quite humourous, only because it sounds a lot like mine. Lots of children hear something and they want to know all about that person and see everything that they are hiding. It reminds me of when i was little and my friends and I would go to a park which was right next to a drunk mans house. The man would always just creep on us through his window and all you would see was his eyes. So we would always make dares for kids to go talk to him when he came out of his house. This man reminded me a lot of Boo Radley because us kids wanted to know everything about this guy and wanted to know what happened to him. Every night when we got home we would always ask our parents about him, and they would all tell us to go to a different park. Yet, we were so intreged to go see him. Have you guys ever been so interested in finding out something that you would disobey your parents rules to learn more about it? I did.
What i have learned about Boo in this chapter is that they thought that he wasn't alive anymore, but he's living. And he has a disability of some sort, because what kind of kid would stab there dad?
Education in this book is very different to education in our society today. In the book, the teacher got mad at Scout for learning from her dad, now a days, teachers encourage parents to teach there children because it makes their job so much easier and makes them ready for all of there educational years. I think that the way education nowadays is correct, because you can't get mad at a child for learning, thats just wrong.

    Expand:
There is a lot of courageous movements in this novel.
The most courageous character in this novel so far would have to be Scout. I think scout is very courageous because she sticks up to her teacher for what she believes (getting taught by her father). I also think she is very courageous because she always hangs out with the boys in the story, and she always ends up doing everything they tell her to do, no matter what. She is very courageous to even listen to Dill and Jem and do what they tell her to do.

  15. I think that the kids are so interested in Boo radley because what kid wouldn't want to see a "ghost". in my town there is something that happens like this because we apparently have a albino deer "white deer". Some people think that it isn't there but i have seen this deer millions of times so people should start to believe because it is here.:)

  17. Chapters 8-11.
I like the way Harper Lee has Scout narrarate the story. It makes the book seem that much better from a childs point of view because we can relate more to it since we are also young adults. It is also nice that scout is narrarating because it shows us the perspective of being a woman back in that time period where they were treated very badly. If the story was told by Atticus i think everyone would not be as engaged because he seems like a different father.. and not very fun?
Now that Boo has put the blanket on Scout without her knowing it makes me really engaged because I want to actually meet him. He seems like a great person that is just judged a lot. It reminds me of some people in my life that at first i judged but when I finally got to know them I really liked them. Have you ever been in that situation? How do you think Boo is going to be incorporated into this story? I don't know how Harper wants to put him on the story and finally get him introduced. It makes me want to read more to find out how we actually meet him...
    :)

The book would be different if Boo Radley would be the narrator because it might be a little more exciting. Scout is a good narrator because she is kind of the lady that tries to help out everybody and is everybodys friend. This book is starting to get good and is sounding very fun and exciting.

  22. Chapter 12-13.
Throughout these chapters we see major changes in the characters.
Scout is turning into more of a woman while her aunt is trying to change her into a respectful woman that she should become. We also see that Jem has hit more of a puberty spurt which makes him very moody and "too cool" to hang out with his little sister whom has now been turning into a young lady. I have been in the same situation as Scout. My sisters became very moody and not wanting to hang out with me as they got older and too "mature" to be around me.
Have you ever been in this situation before?
Jem seems to be changing a lot. It would also be very hard on Scout because she has no one to play with considering Dill didn't come to Maycomb this Summer. This book is very historic for sure because it gives off well details of people of different races invading other peoples culture: like when calpurnia took Jem and Scout to her church; some people from her church frowned apon them. Have you ever invaded something and felt as if you were just frowned apon and not wanted at all?

  23. Final Post Focus 4
When Scout's aunt comes to town she kind of is surprised because she doesn't really like her. She is wondering why her uncle didn't come and that was because he had to stay home and take care of the house at the landing. jem starts to not want to hang out with his sister. he wants to be "cool". I have two older brothers and they do the same exact thing. they never want me to hang out with them. If Boo would to be the narrator i think it would just give us another persepective of life in Maycomb county.

  24. Hey! My name is Jasmin and I'm in Johnson's other english class. I'm jumping into this blog because I can relate to the topic of the Finch kids maturing and also feeling unwanted in a foreign place. I thought it was interesting how Dill was split between the two relationships. He would stay with Scout when he wanted to be an immature child, but then again, there was always Jem to talk to when he was feeling a bit more mature. I still don't understand why Lula harrassed the Finch children when Cal decided to take them to church. After all, their father was very popular in the black community. I was sure that everyone there would have been welcoming and understanding.

  25. Hey I'm Luke P. I go to Westosha Central in Wisconsin. I am a sophomore, and like to play most sports.
In the story Jem does sort of stop hanging out with Scout because he thinks that he is to old for her. Even though he does this he is still very protective of her and helps her out on when he can. I think that it was really good for him to do.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Focus 5
    Chapter 14-15.
    Jem Changes:
    - Change of attitude.
    - Starts to spend time away from scout.
    - Tries to tell scout what to do all of the time. He thinks that he has sinoirity power over Scout.
    - Begins to Grow Physically.
    - Begins to be more free and disobeys his fathers rules by going to the jail to see his dad in the middle of the night while Atticus went there to be alone without children.

Every one undergoes changes throughout there lifetime. We all have to become independent somewhere and we have to start here. As children grow older they become independent by choice. In some cases parents make there children become very independent of themselves and sometimes it just comes naturally to them. Its also like hitting puberty: things change. I became independent by myself. I was able to just make my own decisions and choose who I want to to become.

    JOURNAL.

    Dear Journal;
I experianced a life changing thing last night. I followed my father to the jail where he went to meet up with a mob. The mob came to talk about my dad defending a african american. When I saw them meet my dad there I got shivers down my spine. I was so scared for my dad. I thought that he was going to get critically injured or be killed. I felt as if I had to help him. I felt so useless just watching. Scout was the one who jumped out and ran through the crowd to my dad. My dad looked very startled. Dad pleaded me to take Scout and Dill home but I felt frozen in my spot, I couldn’t move because I was so scared of what would happen next. I felt so embarrassed as scout recognized Mr.Cunning ham and tried to make conversation with him after she had done a rather immature deed. As my father watched her in astonishment. I realized that everyone is just a person and everyone has there own beliefs. Not everyone has one personality but they have two. Mr Cunningham assured Scout that he would say hi to Walter for her then he took off without any threats or anything to say. On the walk home I thought my father would be angry with me, but he just walked home with us in silence.

I think that the book is starting to get really good. When Scout tels us about the mob it tells me that Maycomb isn't just the nice little old neighborhood that everybody loves. it tells me that there is some racism "gangs". This might mean that if you don't believe what they believe they might end up doing something bad to you or your family. It was a good thing that Jem and everybody showed up because if they wouldn't have Atticus might not be in the book anymore. (if you know what I mean)

  28. Symbols.
    Mocking Bird.
From what I have gathered from the research I have done, the mocking bird is a symbol of innocence; whom gets killed or looked down apon for no reason. Relating to the book, the mocking bird brings out characters in the story. It is a symbol of innocence, trust, and honesty.
I think Scouts name is the most symbolic in this story. Her name to me represents how she is very adventurous, and reminds me a lot about a “boy scout” because she’s willing to do whatever she needs to , to be in the know. She is willing to do anything boys do and acts more like a boy because she is not afraid of anything. She is a very strong character.
To be an individual in society it means to be to be yourself, and by not caring about what other people are like. An individual Is a person who makes there own decisions in life. I am a very individual person because I am the kind of person who doesn’t care about what other people think and I just do what I want.
Atticus to me does not seem masculine at all. I think he is a very down to earth man, but very quiet and doesn’t go about doing “manly” things. He never is doing heavy labour or anything around the house he is very quiet and just sits around and reads books. Which to me is not very masculine because to me masculine is a lot of labour around the house and never time to just sit around and read. My father is very masculine because he is the one always doing the hard labour while my mom is making supper and cleaning. How about your dads?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree Micheal.
You never know what could have happened to Atticus if Scout, Jem and Dill came to the rescue. I bet if They didnt follow him that Atticus could have been toast for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I don't think Atticus is looking to feel masculine in the story. His attitude towards life is just do the right thing. He does not feel the need to prove his masculinity to anybody. It seems as if it does not really matter to him. That is what I think being a good person is. It is doing what you feel is right, no matter what anybody thinks of you.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Final Post Focus 6
To what I know the Mockingbird is a bird that "sings" the most beatiful music a bird can make. I have never seen a mockingbird but were my grandma lives in Somers, Wisconsin they are at her house all the time and she says there nice to listen to while reading a book.
Atticus seems to be one of the nicest guys in Maycomb. He will help whomever he will do whatever you ask. Like when Atticus is defending a black guy because nobody else will help him defend him. Wtticus is one of the nicest guy in Maycomb.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Hey guys, this is Jasming again. I think Atticus is such a nice character in this book, not because of what other people in Maycomb think of him, but i think he's more concerned about the kind of people his own kids will turn out to be. This story is filled with character developments and it shows that even when Atticus is placed in a hard spot, he doesn't blame other people and he relys strongly on his morals. He wants Jem and Scout to know that color of skin has nothing to do with who a person really is. When it comes down to it, Atticus is a perfect role model for his kids whether he realizes it or not.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I never thought of it that way.
Since you put that Atticus is masculine by sticking up for the blacks, that makes more sense. Atticus is a very brave person to put up with all of the talking behind his back just for sticking up for a person of a different race. Racism makes me very aggrovated because i just cant understand why people will just judge people like that, they're just people but different colour. You can't assume anything about a person. Stereotypes suck.

    ReplyDelete
  34. A mockingbird is the main symbol in this novel to represent Tom Robinson. Killing a mockingbird is a sin. They don't do anything to harm anything, so they should not be killed. It relates to the story because Tom Robinson is actually innocent. Atticus proves that, but the jury has their minds made up against black people.

To be an individual in society means being yourself. Having your own rights and knowing exactly what they are. Being able to express yourself in a certain manner to get your point across. Atticus is a typical man. He isn't the stereotype though. He knows what's right and what's wrong. Also, he puts others before himself and men don't usually do that.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Final Post 7
The person that is changing the most is Atticus. I picked Atticus because he's starting to show what he really is all about. Things that his own kids didn't know about him. He is also trying to show that all people are the same and that everybody should just get along with everybody. He is doing this by defending a black guy in the trial. He's starting to show everybody how he really is.

  36. MAJOR TURNING POINTS IN THE NOVEL.
    Focus #8
I think that the major turning point was with the mob scene. It really shown how masculine Atticus actually is and how he sticks up for what he believes in and does whatever his heart tells him to. Or in the trial, the jury has to choose on whether they should go with the evidence or just choose according to the race of the man. Unfortunately they choose the racial path which was very crude because they had all of the evidence that Tom Robinson did not touch her.
I think Atticus is becoming a very strong character in the novel. He sticks up for himself and other people while not caring what color their skin was. I never thought that Atticus would become this major in the book. He shows a lot of courage in the book and I am starting to just love his character. Who do you think is the strongest character?
    ALSO:
The trial is very frustrating for me because everyone knows that Tom Robinson is not guilty but then when they call him guilty for just being black, it makes your stomach turn. Even if they had the evidence that Mr. Ewell abused his daughter they are just so racist that they do nothing about it. It makes me cringe. How do you feel about the trial?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Final post focus 8
Well, Carrisa I think the mob scene is the major turning point of the story but not for the same reason. I think it is because it shows how racist and mean people really are in Maycomb county. I think that Atticus is stubborn because he is sticking up for what he believes in. If Scout wouldn't have said anything to Mr. Cunnigham then Atticus probably would have been killed because the mob had guns and weapons and Atticus didn't have anything. I think that there was not even a point to the trial because the jury knew that Tom Robinson wasn't going to win because he was black so there was no real point to having the trial.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hey, I am Matt and I attend Central high school and I am a student in Miss. Johnson’s 2nd hour English class. You are both right that the mob scene by the jail is turning point. It shows that Atticus is willing to put his life on the line for what he believes is right. Things were going to be bad if Scout and the other children did not have shown up, the mob was going to lynch Tom and probably murder Atticus along with him. After Scout talks about Walter and Mr. Cunningham's entailment, Mr. Cunningham realized what they were doing was wrong and he probably asked himself the question; "why do I want to hurt someone who helped me greatly and expected very little in return."
Can you think of other turning points in the novel? What do you think the most significant turning point in the novel is so far?
About the trial though Michael, there was point in having the trial, every man is subject to a fair trial by a jury of his peers. There is one problem with that though, Tom's right to a fair trial, he was condemned from the start because of the color of his skin and everyone including tom knew that.

    Turning Points

Hi, I am Cassidy I am a student at Central High School and I am in Miss. Johnson's 8th hour English class.

Carissa I would have to agree with you on the jail scene, it was a huge turning point. And I was shocked I didn’t think of it. Not only does it enhance Atticus as a strong character, but it also shows how much people in town hated Tom Robinson, well not really just Tom Robinson himself but all blacks.

I feel that there are many parts in the trial that could be looked at as a turning point, one of them being Mayella Ewell's prosecution on the stand. This is a turning point because by that time Jem and the readers become very confident that Atticus is going to win Tom's case. But that doesn't happen leading us to another turning point which is the trial itself. The trial opens the reader’s eyes to how prejudice people in Maycomb really were, especially considering the hard evidence on how Tom wasn't guilty. The trial also changes Jem's view on people 100% making him look down on many people. The trial also changes many opinions on Atticus as well as Bob Ewells. Atticus becomes greater in peoples eyes since they knew they wouldn't have the guts to defend Tom themselves. On the other hand Bob Ewells got the opposite effect the trial destroyed his image (At least whatever image he did have). Before he was just a drunk, now he is a drunk that beats his daughter fool.

  40. Aunt Alexandra seems to be changing the most. She sounds like she's starting to understand more where the kids are comming from and treats them with more respect than when she got there. Instead of snapping right away, she waits, and gets the story clear first. She is showing more care and love towards the kids rather than yelling at them for everything. She is being a better mother figure than she was in the beginning.

Jem is also changing a lot. He now sees how dissapointing life can be at times. After seeing the trial, he had a whole different view on things and life in general. He's growing to be more mature, and he truly cares about others. In the beginning of the story, he could care less about things and he was immature playing around being goofy. Now, he grew up and started taking a role in the house as a man. They all respect it, and give him space.

    ReplyDelete
  41. ALSO: The trail made Bob look like a big goof. I loved it. I cant even imagine a dad beating up his daughter, I know it happens but it is just wrong. I wish people were just nice and peaceful: better yet, NOT RACIST.
At first i thought Scout was going to be the strongest charater throughout the book but my thoughts cascaded to ATTICUS. I never ever ever thought that he would come out like that. I thought that he was gunna be just a chill dad but no he is actually serious and openminded. He likes to tell people what he thinks, and i like that because that is how i am. He also believes in everything that he does: another trait I have, I connected more and more to atticus throughout the whole story! How do you relate to the characters?

I think that social injustice is still in my community today because of people being racist all the time and nobody excepting to do a new thing. There are still people today that are very racist and it varys for reason but whatever the reason it isnt good. We are all the same and we are all the same type inside just a different color on the outside.

  43. Focus #9:

That quote has a lot of meaning to it. It is pretty much saying that no matter what they did, Tom Robinson would have been found guilty no matter what. He was innocent, and people clearly saw that, but he was black, so he must have been a terrible person. Racism is a wrong, but powerful thing. Unfair to innocent people. One little thing that Mayella said killed Tom. She basically could have picked a negro off the road, any negro, said they raped her, and gotten away with it. She could kill any black man she would want.

When we criticize Hitler, we ourselves are kind of being hypocrites. We all know what he did was devastating and extremely wrong, but don't we judge people everyday? So what that person is saying is, how can you feel so strongly about Hitler doing wrong, if you don't like black people. Or you don't like white people. Or if you are racist at all. It is very hypocritical and that kid is trying to explain that to Jem.

Harper Lee's theme is still around to this day in the sense that people are still too judgemental to be fair about anything. The have to have their opinion on you first, before they decide anything else. For some people, this may mean unfair injustice.

I see hypocracy all the time. I even catch myself doing it sometimes. I do my best to get to know people before I judge them, but sometimes it just comes naturally. Everyone is hypocritical at one time or another. Some people are more crucial about it than others. It's not right at any cost, it's just a part of life I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  44. [Focus 9]

    I agree Kendra.
    The quote is VERY significant.
I don't know how people can be so racist even if it was "back in the day" how can people be so cruel. I believe it is also pretty hypocritic of them, because 'nowadays' older people are like "oh those teenagers , always skipping school and smoking dope." but really they were just as bad when they were young- actually worse, they were RACIST!
    It still goes on today.
People are very racist throughout the society. You will always hear a racist joke and its always said by someone that doesnt mean it but it comes out that way. Also, Racism also comes from our grandparents, as they did live the same time the book was published they went through the racism and are also racists' themselves. The racism gets passed down in our society from our elders, or we hear it through the media. We need to elimate racism from our world, and the only way to do that .... i have no idea, people do put it out in media and speak out but that obviously doesnt work since people are still racist freaks. What do you think we could do to destroy it? It's very hard to destroy considering it is coming from our ancestory.

    ATTICUS FINCH.
obviously, the MOST heroic character of the novel :)
Atticus was the stongest character in the book, i couldn't get over how much he grew throughout the whole story. It amazed me. I thought he was just going to be a subtle dad sitting around reading his books, not doing things that usual 'dads' would do. As i read more passed the first 3 chapters I realized the he was going to be a major character for sure. He stuck up for whatever he believed in through all of the insults and everything. He was an anti-prejudice person and just an all around good citizen, he stuck up for people in his community; black or white. Atticus was my favourite character.

I agree with you Carissa Atticus Finch is the most heroic person in the novel. Everybody is looking up to him and everybocy knows him. He is a all around good man, he's respectful. The relationship between white people and black people has gotten better over the years but theres still that controversy between the two. Some people are still racist and do not like black people. I don't know about you guys but I have truly enjoyed doing this blog with you guys and maybe on another book we can do the same thing. Sincerly
