  8. Hey,
So I’m thinking that you guys need to do a lot of work! We have already done Focus 1-3 and you guys haven’t even done any. Allan needs to get his butt in gear and start working too. There isn’t anything to mark you on so you guys basically have a 1 on everything. When you make your posts ask questions and answer other people’s questions. Good Luck!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Well canada is cool.. Literally lol especially in winter I have been to the states many times I actually drove through Wisconsin going to Tennessee..
Right now im on chapter 10. I find this book somewhat hard to understand since its not my type of reading material. The vibe i get from the town of Maycomb is that not very many are well educated. Everyone knows everything about everyone and they somewhat get along.

  10. YEAH well i think that Boo should be given a chance and he shouldnt be judged before they even got to know him. AGREE OR DISAGREE.

  11. Hi my name is Allan Aguilar. I am a student at Westosha Central High School. I joined late because I just switched out of honors. I am fun to be around,I like to kid around alot and that is what I mainly get in trouble for. So im sure i will have fun in this group

  12. I agree with you Angel. I think that the kids should give him space and they should stop trying to get a glance at him by running around on his property. As well as trying to put notes in his window. I find Mrs Dubose very creepy. Its nice that Jem goes to read to her. Its sad when she dies, it almost seemed as thought Jem was starting to get along with her before she passed away.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well ALLAN im not to sure of that. heres why.
Boo just doesnt know anyone really well so hes judged wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ya exactly. People are too quick to judge when it comes to others. Even though he doesn't come outside much doesn't mean they shouldn't go and try to force him out. He is the kind of person that wants to be left alone. He is like the Ewells in a way. They only show up for the first day of school and that is all. Boo Radley only comes out of his house sometimes, they like time to themselves. If Boo wanted to be bothered and seen in public he would do it freely.

  16. Well that's great Sarah. Umm well he loses his pants and than when he goes back to get them they are sewn back up and are folded and he doesn't tell anyone but that's why he was all like moody and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  17. When the house sets a flame, Boo puts a blanket over Scouts head so she cant see him. And the lady who owns the house is all like happy because she never really liked the house because it was to big for her, she wanted more land for her garden and she tried previously to destroy her house but all the previous encounters were failures.

  19. May someone please help me out I beleive ive been doing the post wrong

    ReplyDelete
  20. I found it actually pretty funny when he lost his pants. Just the amount of description into what he felt when he saw his pants were sewn up was really good. The way they tried to cover up the whole thing with the whole poker game was interesting considering I doubt they even know how to play poker. Even if they did know how to play poker its crazy to try and picture strip poker for kids their age.

  21. Sorry Angel. I do not go on myspace anymore.

    Jem’s Coming Of Age

    • Wanting to tell Atticus about Dill unexpected visit
    • Wanted Scout to go back home when she left to find Atticus just before the mob scene
    • Taking on more responsibilities
    • Wanting to be more independent
    • Tells Scout to be more like a women
    • Shows respect for adults
    • Starting to keep to himself
    • Tries not to get involved in arguments and issues

    Me Coming Of Age

    • Getting my license
    • Taking on more responsibilities
    • Wanting to be independent
    • Trying to find a job
    • Wanting to make money
    • Tries not to get involved in arguments and issues
    • I keep to myself
    • I want to figure things out for myself
    • Want to deal with problems on my own

The mob scene tells us that humans are more aggressive with other people when they are in groups. It’s harder to deal with a group than it is to deal with one individual.

    Journal
Today will be a day that I will never forget. Atticus left the house. Before he left he said goodnight to Scout and I. He stated we would be in bed by the time he got home. Atticus didn’t tell us where he was going, but Scout and I figured he would probably go to his office. He left and took the car into town. At around ten o’clock, I started getting dressed. Scout wondered what I was up to. She asked me why I was getting dressed, and I told her that I was going to see where Atticus was. Scout insisted that she wanted go with me. After a short debate I said Scout could join me. We stopped and got Dill to join in on our adventure. He snuck out of the house and we followed his father to the town center. We could see Atticus sitting in front of the Maycomb jail, reading a newspaper from a little distance away. As for me becoming more mature I suggested that we not disturb Atticus and that we should return home. A moment later, four cars drove into Maycomb and parked near the jail. A group of men got out and filed toward the jail. One man demanded that Atticus move away from the jailhouse door. Atticus coldly refused. Scout went racing out of her hiding place next door, only to realize that this group of men differed from the group that came to our house the previous night. Dill and I followed Scout, and Atticus ordered me to go home. I refused. One of the men told Atticus that he had fifteen seconds to get us children to leave.
Meanwhile, Scout recognized Mr. Cunningham, a father of a classmate Walter Cunningham that she went to school with. She talked to him about his legal entailments as well as his son. Scout asked him to tell his son “hey.” All the men stare at her. Mr. Cunningham squats down and tells Scout that he will tell his son “hey” for her. He then tells his companions to leave. They depart, and Mr. Underwood, the owner of the newspaper, speaks from a nearby window where he is positioned with a double-barreled shotgun: “Had you covered all the time, Atticus.” Atticus and Mr. Underwood talk for a while, and then Atticus took us home.

  24. Hi I am Rachel. I am not in this discussion group, I am in Johnson's honors english. When Ms. Maudie has the house fire, Boo Radley doesn't cover Scout's head so she can't see him. He places a blanket on her shoulders and she is so focused that she doesn't notice that she even had a blanket on her. To Tamara, nice job on your posts. YOu are relating the book to your life and analyzing very well.

The exploration of the mockingbird shed light on other elements of the story by telling about the lives of black people. Just because someone is a different color doesn’t mean they aren’t people too. We are all the same on the inside. It’s not fair to think that people are automatically guilty for being another color. People are judgemental and usually if one person says a person is guilty everyone agrees.
    Names and Meanings-
Jem- Scouts older brother. He is twelve years old. Since the beginning of the story we have seen him grow into a maturing boy. He is becoming more independent and responsible. He looks out for his younger sister and tries to keep her out of trouble. I would have to say that his name possibly symbolises strength. Another word that comes to my mind of what “Jem” might symbolise is the word Leader. He stays strong throughout the story and tries to lead his sister to a proper life and tries to keep her safe for the most part. Scout always tries to stick with Jem she always wants to get involved with what activities or whatever he is doing. That’s where the “Leader” factor comes in to play.
Atticus- Atticus is one of the few residents in Maycomb County that is committed to racial equality. Atticus is a widower. He is a strict man but he is fair. He is a father. Atticus teaches his kids things that they can’t learn in school. I think Atticus means peace keeper, he tries to make everything fair for everyone including people of different color. Finch his last name is a kind of bird. Birds are peace full, and they lull us with their singing.
Scout- Scout is a nine year old girl. She is the narrator of the story, and she is also the protagonist. She is suppose to act like a young woman but instead does the opposite. She is boyish, and does things that most girls her age wouldn’t do. She wears clothes the girls don’t wear. I think Scout’s name symbolises the fact that she is adventurous. She is always doing something interesting and most of the time always getting into trouble. In the beginning of the story you can always find her trying to do things with her older brother Jem. When Jem matures she has to find alternate friends because Jem just wants to be alone.

Boo Radley- The kids are scared of Boo, they have an obsession of trying to get him to come out of his house so they can finally see his face. He lives in Maybcomb. Boo’s name could symbolize a ghost, you hear about him although, you never see him, but you know he is there.
Dill- He is a confident boy with an active imagination. He is Jem and Scouts good friend and summer neighbour. He runs away from home in the story and ends up at Jem and Scouts house where they later find him under Scouts bed. Dill watches the trial of Tom Robinson and cries because he doesn’t like the way Mr. Gilmer is talking to Tom. Dill’s name symbolizes that he is different.
The Mockingbird- In the book the mockingbird symbolizes innocence. Innocent people are hurt by people who are careless or who have evil intentions. It’s the same for birds they are innocent and get shot at with air-rifles. They are there to sing for us. They don’t hurt us so we shouldn’t hurt them.

Being an individual means you have a right to make your own choices. As well being able to say what you really mean. It means you are able to be independent. Being an individual allows you to figure out who you are and how you are going to live your life.

Atticus does align with the stereotypical view of masculinity. He sticks up for black people when he knows everyone else would just try to put the black people in jail. Sticking up for other people makes him brave. He is a role model to his children and a good loyal citizen. Atticus likes to spend his time reading. People might have different thoughts about what masculinity means they may think muscular, big boned, buff. Masculinity does involve that but it’s also being able to stand up to someone without physically hitting each other. It also involves being courageous.

This books frame shows courage because Atticus is defending Tom Robinson and that shows courage. This book shows cowardice the way Bob Ewell will not admit to his failure at being a good father and beating Mayala.

“Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town, when I first knew it.”

It reminds me of small towns, that are deserted, elderly people live, rundown buildings, and not a lot of action like the city would.

Chapter 2: “The Cunninghams never took anything they couldn’t pay back –“ “–They never took anything off of anybody, but they get along with what they have.”

It shows that they’re respectful honest people, that are selfless, and don’t want to have to rely on someone to help them out.

This shows the perspective in a childs point of view in wich she wanted to show the segregation and rascim in the world at this time. This may get more adults to understand and realize the effects of this wrong doing

Exploring this book shows the inside details that others might not realize. Like the real in depth of the trial. Of how some people mike think differently than they would first appear. In wich other's might somewhat be a shady character and there appearance does not give off what there personality realy is.

I believe that the antagonist in this book is Mr. Ewell. The way he is opposing all of the main characters such as Atticus, Scout, and Jem. He goes to trial with a black man over a rape case. People need to remember the date we are talking here. When slavery was still very huge and so was rascism. He basically tries pushing Atticus to the breaking point. Atticus however keeps his cool and remains poise under pressure

Jem shows coming of age the way he doesnt really want to be around Scout as much. He wants to hang with the guys. He also becomes much more bossy instead of trying to egg her on, he abruptly takes control and tells her what to do. He also acts like he knows alot more than Scout and acts like her superior. Saying things like, excuse her sir she's not 9 yet, and so on and so forth.

    Chapter 18-24

What do you guys and girls think are the major turning points in the novel so far?

To me I think the major one would be that Tom Robinson lost the trial. Then during the exercise period when he attempted to escape and the guards shot him seventeen times killing him. I think this is the turning point because Tom Robinson was not guilty. The jury was unfair they believed the ones that were really guilty. It was easy to see that Tom was telling the truth about what happened. When he was in the blind raving charge at the fence the only thing the guards did to try and stop him was calling him to stop. Then they fired a few warning shots in the air. After that is when they shot to kill. Even though Atticus and his family weren’t Tom Robinson’s family they were all emotionally upset about his passing. Atticus fought so hard during the court case to prove his innocence and Jem thought that they had it under control and that for sure they were going to win. Unfortunately they were wrong, the jury thought otherwise.

I believe that the major turning points of this novel so far include Jem finding his pants on the fence folded neatly. Scout having a blanket put over her by Boo wich showed that he was still around. I agree with you Tamara the most important in my mind is the trial. I believe that they played the "race" card and convicted Tom over absolutely nothing. All of the evidence was in place for Bob Ewell to be convicted. However the trial went out for a scapegoat and sadly that scapegoat was Tom Robinson.

    ReplyDelete
  34. With Atticus questioning Mayella and Tom you could for sure tell there was a difference with their stories. When Mayella was telling the story about what happened she wasn't really sure what really happened one moment and then remembered the next. That to me was weird. You could tell that she was lying. Tom's story of what happened was very convincing and you could easily tell he was telling the truth. When Jem thought that they were going to win the case I really thought they would too, at least that's what i was hoping. It was really sad during chapter twenty-four when he got killed. You can definitly tell that it affects the Finch's.

  35. (Focus 8)

Hi I am Jason G. and I am a student that attends Central High School in Salem, Wisconsin. My hobies include playing hockey and baseball. I would like to contribute my main ideas of the story so far. The main ones that I came up with were...

-When Jem, Scout, and Dill wondered and imagined about Boo Radley for a couple of years. They did such things as write letters and comunicate through an oak tree.
-The kids tried to see Boo and if he was real. Nathan Radley scared them so they ran away frantically and Jem left his pants after they tried to make a clean get away. He went for his pants later and found them all sticthed up.
-Judge Taylor asking Aticus to Defend Tom Robinson who is accused of raping Bob Ewell's daughter.
-Aunt Alexandra moves in with her brother Aticus and Jem and Scout.
-There have been mobs forming in Maycomb that hate Tom Robinson and want him gone for good.
    -Tom Robinson's trial
-Tom Robinson is later convicted guilty
-Tom dies trying to escape from prison and is shot seventeen times.

Now I originally choose Tom Robimson's death while escaping prison the most significant event to occur in this book so far. While I look at this it is difficult to come up with the most significant event that has ocurred, but I think I finally have my answer. I know many would believe that the trial and Tom's conviction are obviously the most important and significant events in the book. I believe they are important plot points, but my opinion is that the more significant main events are the minor ones that fly over people's minds because many don't think to consider them as main ideas or even have higher level thinking towards them. That is why I choose the event with the mobs forming around Maycomb which are trying to get rid of Tom Robinson for good. This gives a lot of detail and makes a person think even before the trial starts. It shows the tensions between white and blacks at this time. It also shows that a white man's word is taken much more serious then a black man's one and the resulting factor is mobs that want to riot. This also foreshadows danger either towards Tom and his family or even Atticus and his family. The reason I say Atticus might be in danger is because these mobs want to hurt and get rid of Tom and those who defend a black and Atticus is the lawyer defending Tom. At one point Jem and Scout begin to acknowledge Atticus's safety and realize that they all could soon be in danger. In many eyes people may go what is this guy thinking picking this as a significant event, but if they stop and think about this point and if they understand my reasoning, then I may be able to shed some insight on those people. So would anyone agree with me that the point like the mobs forming in Maycomb may be a significant point that builds up the story a little? I think it does.

    ReplyDelete
  36. You have a really good point! Now that you mention it yeah I agree. I pretty much just seen past everything that happened with the mob. You pretty much sumed it up enough that I don't have anything to add onto it. The mob scene although seeming very small and non-significant in the book to me it didn't seem like anything much. It never occured to me the importance of it. It just showed up to me as the upcoming of the trial. The danger affect of it i suppose didn't really hit me as hard as everything else in the book.
