  9. 1. Maycomb seems like a sad, poor town with lots of problems but there’s a system that makes it work. Seems like in most small towns, everyone tries to get along and deals with complications like being poor or not being able to feed their children. The community seems actually quite judging for example the Radleys, children make up stories of the horrible stuff Boo does and no one even tries to visit them. Then again they seem sort of accepting of the Ewells, well not really accepting but they look the other way. I think most communities try to care for each other and looking out for each other but there’s always someone who’s not as accepted. Our community is accepting at least up front and seems pretty normal, but really deeper into it there are problems and odd people as well.
    2. So far I think the biggest issue is Poverty because of the recession. The Radley’s seem like those neighbours that everyone just avoids and whispers about. Some families are so poor they can’t even afford to give their children a lunch that is really sad how that was just so accepted. Even first grade children thought nothing of their class mate not being able to eat.
    3. Maybe Boo Radley will end up escaping from the house and killing someone or will end up being murdered. I’m thinking he will have something to do with the title because they seemed to talk about him a lot.
    4. Boo is a scary person to the children, like a sort of boogie-man. I think he’s not really as scary as they think because I’m sure he actually doesn’t eat raw animals and peak in their windows at night. He seems like a very troubled, violent person with a lot of issues and maybe spending some time in a mental facility, even if his parents disagree, would have helped.
    5. Outsiders are people we can’t bring ourselves to accept because of certain differences. Sometimes people can be cruel and harsh to an outsider but other times its not as bad and they just aren’t as cared for. Some people are outsiders because they act or sometimes look different then our norm in society. People are usually scared or threatened of things they don’t understand. Not all the Radley’s are thought of as Boo Radley, but because they chose to stay inside and not socialize or go to church people seem to look at all of them with an uneasiness.

  10. Significant Quotes
Chapter 1 – pg.11 “The shutters and doors of the Radley house were closed on Sundays, another thing alien to Maycomb’s ways: closed doors meant illness and cold weather only.” I believe this quote is important because it shows how tight knit the community is and that they like its so weird and different to not be the same.
Chapter 2- pg. 22 “… she discovered that I was literate and looked at me with more than faint distaste.” I picked this quote because it seems so different then our society today, like imagine being yelled at for already knowing how to do something. It seems like Miss. Caroline is really angry because now she really won’t have anything to teach Scout.
Chapter 3- pg. 41 “… If you’ll concede the necessity of going to school, we’ll go on reading every night just as we always have.” I chose this quote because I think it’s going to important to the story that Atticus is such a fair, honest man and able to make a compromise instead of just telling Scout, no u have to go to school. He seems like a really smart, understanding man and I’m guessing this will come in handy for Scout in the future maybe?

  11. Chapters 4-7
I thought the part with Scout rolling in the tire was pretty funny. I never tried to do anything like that when I was little. I also thought it was pretty funny that Jem lost his pants and said he had lost them in strip poker. I’ve never really heard of little kids playing strip poker even as an excuse so I thought it was funny. I would make up really silly stories to cover-up bad things that happened, like this one time I got hurt and said a bird came down and started pecking me. I don’t even know why I said it.
I think the children are so consumed with Boo because he’s so interesting and mysterious. The stories about him are way more interesting then the stories they always play repeatedly. When I was little both myself and older brother, were obsessed with playing x-men. We would always pretend we had super powers and run around the yard but it wasn’t all we would do and they weren’t real people. Did any of you have childhood things you were obsessed with?
I know of only one legend and I don’t even really know it, I’ve just heard about it. There’s an old school house and it’s only one room big, it’s really old and has a chalk bored with a drawing that you can’t erase. I’m not certain but I think it’s a face and it always changes, the face is of an old teacher I think. Are there any legends where you live?
We learned that Boo is in fact still alive. Boo actually seems sort of kind and like he has a sense of humor because the laughing from inside the house from when Scout rolled into it was most likely him. I think it was Boo who had but all that stuff in the tree knot and he seems nice actually not the scary monster we first thought. Do you guys think he is actually a nice guy?
Education is important to me because I was raised to think that way and really want to be able to do anything I want. I think Harper Lee doesn’t agree with me I think she thinks it’s pointless. Education today is still emphasized on group work and working together but they wouldn’t get mad if your parents taught you how to read.

  12. Well, maycomb seems to be a poor but actually happy place, most people get along well, and deal with the depression just fine. the biggest social problem is poverty because some people cant pay for their services in money. I believe that boo will come out eventually and interact with the children in some way. I would describe boo as a relativly shady person in most ways. Outsiders are people that are not "average" in society and that no one will really allow into their social group, they are in most ways a loner.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'm not completely sure about the humorous tone in the first part of chapter four, I didn't really catch onto it. I believe that thte children are so interested in Boo because he is a "mystifing" person to then and yes I can relate to that because I am the same way when I see a person like that, I always want to find out more about them. Down here there really arent many myths that I'm aware of. We learn that he must still be alive because they haven't carried him out of the house yet and that he may have a sense of humor since they could hear laughing from inside the house. I think that the author of the book thinks that education back then was pretty unimportant, it is extremely different in every way from today's way of teaching

    ReplyDelete
  14. I believe that Maycomb is not a very poor "county" but it is going through the Great Depression. The quote that most helped me determine that Maycomb is going through the Great Depression was "Maycomb was told it had nothing to fear but fear itself" and "There was no hurry for there was nowhere to go,nothing to buy and no money to buy it with". All of these quotes are featured in chapter 1.

  15. This blog was actually very good I would say. Good thoughtful responses to the questions and great connections, although you people could ask more questions about the novel if you are not sure about something, and prompt further discussion on what other people are saying instead of always just answering a question or making connections.

  16. I think Harper Lee thinks that education is valuable, but doesn't always agree with the way it is delivered. Find out how Atticus was educated? And the new teacher does not appreciate Scout knowing things?
How about courage and cowardice? What makes someone courageous?
And although poverty was a really big issue, there are some other social issues that will soon come to your attention. Keep reading.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Atticus was educated by his parents at his home so that's how Scout wants to be educated. I don't think the teacher does appreciate Scout's previous knowledge, I'm not quite certain why though, do any of you know? I think Atticus is the bravest man in the story because he is wise and bravery is not always about how tough you are. I think maybe Mr. Radley is a coward, hiding Boo from everyone and filling the tree knot and lying about it. The other big issue is racism.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think Harper Lee is telling the story from an adult perspective, narrated by a child many years after, because she wanted to give a reflecting light to the book, which means giving you the feeling of someone looking back on their life. I think most people look back at their past and can relate to how Scout is telling the book later in life. This perspective also gives us two different ages to consider, one very innocent and naïve, while the other is wiser, and reflecting from past events.
To better understand this novel Harper Lee has put it into the first person perspective, which allows us to feel what she is feeling and understand how much she knows and what she is thinking. Do you think she put the book this way to help us better understand what she is thinking or for another reason?
I think a good work of historical fiction has to have some interesting truths with realistic people. It has to make you feel how they would feel in that time at that event. A historical fiction must captivate you and keep you interested with new ideas and actual events that happened in that time. In “To Kill A Mockingbird,” Harper Lee interests us with the differences between our time and then. She shows us the racial segregation but from a child’s point of view, which makes it easier to understand because it is hard to understand why people would be so harsh just because of the color of your skin. Even today racism is still present, I’ve never personally experienced any racism have any of you?

  20. I’ll do Francis and Miss Caroline.
    1. Francis attributes are outspoken, like when he tells Scout about her dad and says all those things. He’s really mean and rude but I don’t think those are attributes.
Francis brings a reaction from Scout when he calls her father a nigger-lover. Scout doesn’t like his tone, she doesn’t even know what it means, and then she punches him in the face.
Scout learns that she can’t always be so violent and fighting is not the first thing she should do.
    2. Miss Caroline’s attribute is strictness, for when she is dealing with Scout she has a very strict manner.
Miss Caroline brings a reaction from Scout when she gets mad at Scout for already knowing how to read and throughout the morning of the first day of school she continuously fought with Scout.
I think Scout learns that she hates school and she’s ahead of everyone else in her class.

  21. EXTEND FOCUS 4
Right now I think that Aunt Alexandra is the antagonist right now because she is causing a lot of problems for all of them, especially Scout.
Jem is forcing Scout to look at herself as a girl. For example he says, “It’s time you started bein’ a girl and acting right!” (pg.153) Aunt Alexandra was forcing Scout to visit with some of the ladies in Maycomb and giving her lectures on what it means to be a Finch. Aunt Alexandra is making Scout look at herself as a Finch and the ways of a proper Finch.
I think a good work of historical fiction has to have interesting characters that we can relate to. They need to keep us interested in the book with adventures or stories that appeal to us.

  22. If the novel was narrated by Boo Radley the point of view would be very different. Boo would think the kids were making fun of him in the game once they only want to know whats going on inside the house. Then the story would be kinda missed up like, instend of the kids telling the story it would be Boo.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm not sure. I think it would make it less intresting because Boo Radley adds a lot of mystery to the story. If Boo told it you would know everything about him, but then again I suppose the mystery would be in the children. Do you think you would enjoy the book more if Boo was telling it, or less? How do you think Boo feels about the children? I think he likes the children and wants to go and play with them. I think if the book was narrated from his point it would tell us that about him.

in my opinon aunt alexandra is the antagonist because she is a very troublesome person to the kids, trying to get scout to become more of a girl and more like a finch.

so on another note, how is everyone liking the book?

Jem shows his coming of age when instead of trying to hide Dill, he goes to Atticus. This showed a certain maturaty he didn’t have before. For example in the past he would do things that he new were bad and he would get in trouble for, like taunting Boo. When I was younger I would fight with my brother even though I knew the consiquences, but as we both matured we stopped because we new it wasn’t worth it, and also looked for better ways to resolve the conflict. To Jem the best way to resolve finding Dill under the bed was to go to Atticus because he new it wouldn’t work to keep it from him. Jem is also showing that he is coming of age because he likes being alone and away from Scout a lot more, and also playing more mature games, like football and reading istead of make believe games and running around. When I was younger I played with lego a lot because my brother played with it but as I got older I got into more girly things, away from my brother. I think siblings growing apart and spending their time with others their age, is a major part of growing up and maturing. Do you still like playing games that are usually suited for younger children? (hide-and-seek, barbies, ect..)
I think the mob scene tells us how deeply we believe I things and how its hard to change our minds. The mob scene also shows our humanity of not wanting to hurt someone in front of their children. People in the mob scenes were vicous and could have hurt or even killed Atticus just because he was defending someone of a different coloured skin.
    Jem’s Journal Entry
Tonight we followed Atticus to the jail where we found him sitting outside waiting. I new what he was waiting for and was proved right when the cars pulled up. Men got out and Scout, Dill and I went to help. I knew if we left we would probably never see Atticus again. The men were vicous and in a trans-like anger, all wanting the same thing, Tom Robinson dead. They didn’t care who was in the way, until us children came along and refused to leave. I looked deep into Atticus’s eyes and found a spark of thanks beside the fear. He needed us to stay, but at the same time wanted us to go. He would not let them hurt us, but they were all men he knew. How could they? Scout’s speech broke them out of their trans and I believe if not for her we might all be dead. I know Mr. Underwood would have tried to help but it could have ended really badly. I can see now that Atticus isn’t completely fearless, and I will help him as much as I can. I know now that this is going to be the hardest case Atticus has ever handled and he is going to need my strength to come through okay.

I think the exploration of the mockingbird shed’s light on other elements of the story by showing innocence. I think Tom Robinson is the innocent mockingbird in the story; also Jem Scout and Dill are mockingbirds in their own way, with the innocence of children. Killing the mockingbird, I think, either refers to when Tom gets put in jail for something he is innocent for or else it is foreshadowing maybe the loss of the case or literally his death. Even today there are mockingbirds in our society, people wrongly accused and children being exposed to things that they shouldn’t need to be. Do you agree or disagree with what I think about killing the mockingbird refers to?
Scout- Scout’s character is very curious and enjoys exploring. The word Scout referrers to explorer and exploration.
Jem- Jem is full of knowledge, and strength. A jem is something rare and precious and I think Jem’s qualities are rare and will be needed in the future to help his father.
Boo- Boo Radley’s name is something ghosts say and is meant to be frightening. The character Boo is seen as scary and mysterious to most others in the book.
Atticus- He is strong, smart and fair. Atticus sounds like a smart powerful name and was shared by a roman man that was considered the first “publisher.” This suits Atticus because of his wisdom, and him taking on a black case, something not usually done in that time and place. Atticus also means father, which doesn’t really suit him because he is more like a mentor, helping the children along with a care that most fathers fail to possess.
Dill- He is faithful to Scout with his marriage proposal, so far. He is curious and always full of adventure as dill is full of flavour.
The meaning of being an individual in society is to have your own thoughts and opinions. To have characteristics those are different from everyone else’s. It is a feeling that you have when you are different from everyone else but still connected.
I don’t think Atticus’ character aligns with the stereotypical view of masculinity. I think he has a different kind of masculinity. He try’s to see everything fairly and always do the right thing. He knows he isn’t the toughest person in the world and doesn’t try to act like it. He is kind to everyone and doesn’t try to pick fights. He doesn’t teach his children with an iron fist, he is very democratic and always allows discussion.

The mocking bird could be a symbol of Tom Robinson because they are putting him on trial when he did nothing but help, hence the title To Kill A Mockingbird.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Focus #6 Response: I agree with your thought that Tom Robinson is sympbolic to a mockingbird. To back up that statement, Miss Maudie and Atticus both quote (in Chapter 10) that "its a sin to kill a mockingbird because all they do is sing beautiful songs". Like a mockingbird, Tom didnt do anything but make an effort to help the world in a good way.

the reference to a mockingbird shows meaning as it is being related to Tom Robinson, he couldnt have done those things to mayella because he has no use of his left arm, he is a nice person that wouldn't hurt as soul and only does good things for people, as the saying it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because all they do is sing beautiful songs

    Major Turning Points
Scout confronting the mob- If she would have never started talking to Mr. Cunningham the men would never have realised what they were doing and seen that Atticus was a man like them. The mob would not have realised that Atticus is a very respectful man who they should let defend Tom if he wants to, and that they shouldn’t impose their own justice. If Scout wouldn’t have talked to them, Atticus might have died as well Tom, without even having a chance through the child. I think this is the major turning point because everything would have changed if the children had not spied on Atticus and interrupted the mob.
Dill coming back in the summers- Dill makes life better for Scout. She has someone to play with and hangout with. If Dill wouldn’t have come, Scout may not have gone with Jem to the jail and the men might have hurt not only Atticus and Tom Robinson but Jem as well. Then Scout might have been left to be taken care of by Aunt Alexandra and turned into a “lady”.
Tom Robinson getting convicted- If Tom Robinson would have been acquitted Mr. Ewell could have done something really bad to him and his family or to Atticus and his family. He would have never killed himself in the prison, because he would have never even been in the prison.

In the beginning, Jem assumed that Atticus was going to whin the case. After Tom was found guitly despite the fact that the evidnce was with him, he finally realized the how one minded people actually were. He came to a conclusion that their were only three types of people in the world.

mr. Cunningham was one of the men that went to the jail to kill Tom. During the case the jury took the longest that they had ever had to decide the on a negro. Reason being that Mr. Cunnigham had seen that Tom was innocent and knew that he should be released.

  35. Hey, I'm Matt Boss, I'm also in Ms. J's second hour honors class (Like Dustin). I agree with Nikki in that after the trial, Jem came to a realization about people. During the trial, Jem was sure that Atticus would win. He thought this because he was open-minded about the case and had no pre-concieved thoughts about Tom and African American people. Many people at this time, especially in the south, felt that Africans were inferior to white people. People get these thoughts from experiences in their lives and things their parents and other people close to them tell them. And since, in Jem's mind, blacks are equal to whites, he felt that it would be a fair trial and therefore Tom would be aquitted. But, since it was an all-white jury that didn't have the same morals as Atticus and his children, an unfair verdict was reached. This event caused Jem to realize that life isn't fair and that, even in the court room, racism clouds people's way of thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jem has advantages that most children don't have. Through out his life, he has had the freedom to come to descions and learn information by expirencing situations that had lessons behind them. I have found that Atticus' tatic in letting thim discover on their own has really helped them develope faster than most children. Atticus has never told them what they should believe but uses his mere actions to be a good example for them. So when Jem was watching the trial, the only thing he understood were the good morals he had learned from his father, and not the one minded people in the jury. I don't think him getting upset over it was bad either. It shows that he's learing the truth in life on his own and that he doesn't pin a person on their recial fetures.

  37. Focus #10

Atticus by far is the most heroic character in To Kill a Mockingbird. It seems as if Atticus really is not afraid of anything or anyone and doesn't believe anything can happen to him. For example, Atticus was the one who defended Tom in the trial. This took a huge deal of courage because during this time, racism was obviously a huge deal still. Atticus had many enemies when it was discovered that he would be defending a colored man. Atticus recieved many threats coming from the community because of who he was defending and he never backed down from it. This showed a huge amount of courage coming from Atticus.

Atticus also shows a big deal of courage when he allows Aunt Alexandra to come and stay with them. Atticus knew that she would be more strict with Jem and Scout and could create fighting in the home which could have made Atticus tell Alexandra to leave. However, Atticus took the risk which took courage to let her help the children grow up and mature. His courage payed off later on too when Aunt Alexandra did help give Scout the feminine teaching she needed to mature properly. Atticus was definetly the most courageous characher in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Some of the major turning points in the novel so far are when scout and the boys confront the mob when the come to the jail to kill Tom Robinson and she doesn't realize how much she just helped Atticus and Tom, Another is when the jury convicts Tom Robinson because the kids realize how immoral their town is, contradictory to their beliefs the town is alot worse than they thought.

Social injustice will always be relevant in society today because that’s how humans are. There are laws against social injustice as well as laws that allow it. An example of a law that allows social injustice is a law that says the owner of a business has to have a certain percentage of Aboriginal or African American people employed to them. We always strive towards equality but personally I think there is always going to be social injustice as well as racism.
My experience with personal hypocrisy is just when I have fights with my parents I tell them to not get so frustrated so easily because I’m still young but then I can get really frustrated with other people without thinking about them. It’s something I try to work on but when you’re fighting it’s hard to remember your promises to yourself.

Atticus is stating this in his last verdict to the court. I do not belive that he even believes this statement. This was his attempt to push the honor system onto the jury and just hope that they come to the fair conclusion. In all reality, the court did not creat anybody equal. They were biast, wether it was because of pressure or because of their own perspective, a negro was not nearly equal to a white man.

I believe that the hero in to kill A Mockingbird is a small child not a grown man, although Atticus and Boo have acted in very heroic manners. I think that Scout is a hero because of the selflessness she shows in defending her brother and father in the mob outside the jail. Scout does beat up her class mates and sometimes chooses unwisely but for a naïve child she has more courage, strength and reason then some of the grown men in the book. Scout is a hero because she stays strong and is always ready to protect her family even if it puts her in danger. She isn’t a direct hero; she doesn’t save anyone’s life or fight a losing court battle but she does support her family’s decision and stays strong throughout the whole thing.

Back in those times, a black man was always considered dirty and was always blamed for the crime. Atticus attacked the jury's concience and also attempted for sympothy but from the beginning, there was no chance of Tom getting out of jail.

  44. 2.What two characters are compared to a mockingbird? In what way are these characters similar? different?

The first character that is compared to a mockingbird is Tom Robinson, because he was a good person that did nothing but help a poor girl who was alone in the world. The second character that was compared was Boo. He was always being nice to the children and if they had drawn attention to him that would have been like killing a mockingbird because he never did anything worng. Both of them were kind characters that only ever wanted to help. They were both put under false assumptions when they didn't deserve it.
