  4. Very nice to meet you both. I find it very interesting that we are all involved with animals in some sort of way. Have you started to read the book at all yet? my class and I have read about halfway through chapter one. So far I am lost in it but I'm sure that the more we get through, the more interesting it will be. Amy, I also find it very interesting that you have a "school" equestrian team! If only my school had an equestrian team! LOL! I would be in heaven. Kathryn, I also find it neat that you participate in 4-H. the closest 4-H group that we have is about an hour away.

  8. I think Maycomb isn't a very social town. The townspeople like to keep more to themselves rather than socalized with the town folk. People like to walk on the other side of the street if they don't want to be bothered or the town folk will huff when someone tries to talk to them. Maycomb doesn't sound like a town that I would like to live in.I believe that Boo Radley may get tired of being so alone all those years. He may want to start to socialize with the town folk. I believe that is why the town may like keeping to themselves is because of all of the stories they have heard about Boo. I think that Boo Radley is just a lonely old man. He might not even be that old. I don't think that he is even mean or scary at all. It all has to do with being locked up in his house for all those years and people have just mad up stories of how they believe Boo looks like.Being an outsider is like a fish being excluded from his school. You don't feel like you really belong in the world. People like to avoid you because they think you're weird or odd. People love to "assume" what you are like without even getting to know the real you. Some people could be outsiders because maybe they have had something dramatic happen to them in their lives or would like to be alone but I think it woild be nice if some people actually try and get to know those people. Afterall, they could be just really shy.In chapter 1, I think the best sentence would be, "He said it began the summer Dill came to us, when Dill first gave us the idea of making Boo Radley come out." I think this sentence gets readers thinking about how they are going to get Boo to come out and what kind of trouble they will get in along the way. In chapter 2, Miss Caroline is introduced. This chapter make Miss Caroline seem likea really mean teacher because she swats her students. The sentence I chose was, "Before the first morning was over, Miss Caroline Fisher, our teacher, hauled me up to the front of the room and patted the palm of my hand with a ruler, then made me stand in the corner until noon." This also makes it look like Scout is a little trouble maker. It goes to show how different the school system really was back then to how it is today. In Chapter 3, it proves that Scout really is a trouble maker and that what Miss Caroline is doing is not totally for no reason. "Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop."

I don't know. Lol! But so far, this book isn't catching on but the further you read, it sorta gets more interesting. Chapter 8 was a bummer to read, but I have to admit that the part where they didn't know what snow was made me laugh. LOL!

  9. I think that Maycolmb is a town where everyine knows everyones secret. Its just a small town. Boo is the "crazy" person in the town kind of like the center of a creepy storys. All the kids are facinated by him. Miss. Caroline is the new teacher and shes got a new system that Scout doesnt like. The kids try to talk to Boo. Atticus doesnt like that idea.

  10. Alexis,
You seem to think that Boo won't come out because he is afraid that people will redicule him. But maybe it's his choice not to come out. Stay tuned

  13. I think that Boo is so nice for putting the blanket around Scout!!! I thought that it was amazing that she dident even notice though!! The book is pretty good so far but alot of spots are slow. Mrs. Maudie is so mean I think that she could atlest be a little polite to Jem and Scout. The fire was a good part of the book Atticus was so nice to save her rocking chair for her. Do you think that Boo put Jems pants on the fence? I do!!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I agree with you. I thought it was so nice of Boo to put that blanket around Scout. If I had seen a little girl freezing outside I most likely would have done the same thing! This reminds me of when my family and I went camping in British Columbia when I was 8. My brother, who was 3, and I were lying in the back of the car sleeping. Our parents pulled over and put a blanket over us to keep warm.

I believe the children are so obsessed with Boo because I believe that is the only real entertainment their town has. The children make up stories to keep themselves entertained. I can kind of relate to this obsession because when I was younger, I would say about 6, my family and I lived in town houses or apartments all the time and we weren’t allowed to have animals. I used to pretend that I had a dog or a horse and would run in the grass all day.

I have heard of a couple of urban myths about my town. One of them would be that there is a lady down by our rink that eats cats. Another one would be that when they tore down our hospital that we had here, many of the patients that had died in the hospital and now haunt our town. Another one would be that before my family and I had moved into our house, the previous family had a relative die. We later found out that he died in the room that is now my bedroom!

I think that Boo has a very kind-natured side about him. If he didn’t care about anyone else and only himself, we wouldn’t have gone outside to put a blanket around Scout. Boo also wouldn’t have patched up Jem’s jeans and stuck them on the fence if he didn’t know that Jem would be back to get them.

  15. I think if Dill was narrating the story, he would have talked a lot about how much he likes Scout and what his new dad was like. I think it would have been a very boring story if told by Dill because a lot of guys like to get straight to the point and not clue in on the little details. If it was told by Boo Radley, I think it could have been interesting. He would have probably told what it’s like to live in a house all by yourself and how his town thought he was a monster. I think he would have cleared up all the little rumors we have come to believe are true.
Atticus is trying to explain to Scout that it’s not fair to judge someone on how they look or what you have heard about them. People can come to believe that someone is a cruel-hearted monster when they haven’t taken the time to acctuately get to know the person. Don’t judge a book by their cover. What the speaker is trying to say is that look at the situation from the other person’s eyes. It’s a totally different world from someone else’s view. The point of view in this story is coming into place through Scout’s eyes. We get to see what her life was like and so far, it is a very interesting life. I think of Scout somewhat like me. A tomboy. Life is not always fair, but in the end, we somehow manage to get through it all. (Focus 3)

  16. I think Harper Lee decided to tell the story from an adult perspective because if this story was told by a child, I think it would be very hard to follow. Being told by the adult perspective enables readers and draggs them into the story.
If there was no perspective to follow in a story, the story would be a mess. Readers would have a very difficult time understanding a novel because it would be told by many perspectives and not just one.
If the novel is told and written right, readers would enjoy the book a lot more. Whereas, a book that is crazy to follow in reading would lose the interest of its readers.(Extend)

  17. Hi am Jason G. and I am currently enrolled in Central High School which is located in Salem Wisoconsin. I enjoy hockey ,baseball, and playing with my chocolate lab. With that said, I would like to contribute to the coversation between the both of you two. I would first state that I agree with Alexis's opinion about having Scout's interpretation of the book in an adult manor instead of having a child narrate this type of literature. With an adult perspective, the tone of the book is in a mature voice rather than a childish or silly voice. With the mature writing style it keeps the reader involved and interested in the writing, and it also talks to the reader in a way that stands out to others who are much more experienced and those who understand literature, and how it should be used in an essay or novel. If the book was writing in a a way that was told by a child, it would involve a book filled with childish vocabulary and it may give a wrongful interpretation of the book then what is really intended as well. But this is just my opinion.

When Aunt Alex came to town and she just came out and said all the falts in the kids I think that it was rude. I meen there kids but they still understud what she was saying. I thought that it was nice of Cal to bring Jem and Scout to her curch. The lady that meet them at the door was being so rude to them though. I think that she could have been nice like every one say if you dont have anything nice to say dont say it at all. I thought that how they did there curch survice was so cool. Giving that they dident have any books. It was also nice of Jem and Scout to give up there money for Cals churches donation to Toms family. I feel bad for Jem and Scout because they have to deel with everyone calling Atticus a nigger lover and stuff like that. Atticus is doing the right thing I meen everyones equal, just not in that time. I feel sorry not being able to see Dill if they were actual real kids they would be soo cute together!!!

  20. Hi, my name is Danielle C. and I'm in Ms. J's second period class at Central. Have you ever given any thought to the fact that everyone is just acting this way towards Atticus because they don't understand him? To the peole of Maycomb, blacks are like animals and they don't really see them as humans, so they don't understand why anyone would want to defend one. As for Lula, she's probably not too happy to have white children in her church because she's used to white people treating her like dirt, so she's probably not too happy when she sees them in her church, a place where she feels safe and isn't used to dealing with racism there considering First Purchase is an all black church.

  21. I think that Jems comming of age is really going to have an effect on Scout. I meen theve been so close sence well forever and Jem not wanting to be around her will make her feel unwanted kind of. I think that Cal being there is really going to help her though because shes going to be alone alot more. I dont think that aunt A is helping though. I meen shes just trying to rush Scout into everything and shes not ready yet. I think that Dill being there will help her out alot though because their the same age and everything.

  22. Hello, I'm Christina H. I go to Central High, and I like to run.
Anyway, I agree with Danielle C. I think people of Maycomb make fun of Atticus to Jem and Scout because they can't comprehend why he is working on Tom Robinson's case. Everyone in Maycomb was raised to believe that blacks are worthless. The kids simply believe what their parents tell them, so half the time they make fun of Atticus without even knowing why.

Kathryn, I think Aunt Alexandra came to live with them because she thinks they need help. She may think that she is helping the Finches by making them more popular among the folks living in Maycomb. I think her idea of helping is making Scout more lady like. Scout obviously doesn't like this idea, but I think eventually as Scout grows in the book she becomes more okay with the idea of being a girl. Later in the book she wants to buy a baton, which is more of a girly toy.

Throughout the book, Jem and Scout are growing up and learning about not judging others, until they 'walk in their skin'.

  23. Hi, I name is Matt and I am student in Miss. Johnson's second hour english class. I agree with Cathryn because scout is feeling lonely because Jem is growing up and losing intrest in many childish things, such as the treehouse in their yard. And Aunt Alexandra is not helping like you said, she is rushing Scout into becoming a proper young lady instead of being a kid. Scout is also starting to spend more time with Calpurnia and they are starting to get along better.
Good job blogging, keep up the good work.

  24. Calpurnia is very kind and humble to the people she meets and cares about, but if those people do something that causes stress or worry for Calpurnia, she lets them know in her own way that they have done wrong. Aunt Alexandria, to me, is a stuck up lady who is set in her ways. It’s her way or the highway! I really liked the fact that Calpurnia decided to take the kids to ‘her’ church. I believe it was very brave of her and I think it made people respect her even more. When Scout went to church with Calpurnia, I think she realized that even though she is white, she is still respected as an equal and that not all African American’s are crude or harmful. I don’t the fact that Aunt Alexandria thought she could be welcomed into a home and think that she has control over everything. It’s not fair to neither Jem nor Scout. Scout has the right to live how she would like but she still needs to learn the fact that she needs to respect her elders.
I think that Aunt Alexandria is the antagonist because she is always wanting or seeking to cause conflict in the family.

  25. Jem is slowly becoming more independent just like other boys his age. He doesn’t want his sister hanging around all the time. He is reading football magazines and starting to talk like a more mature adult. I grew up pretty fast and was expected a lot of. I didn’t get much of a childhood since I was 10 years old. Jem is very lucky to have a parent and a caregiver that takes care of them so that they can experience being a child. The mob of Maycomb don’t like to experience change and they certainly do not like a white man defending a black man. They grew up set to believe what their parents had taught them and there was no changing their minds. Yes, it’s not fair to be so racist towards your folk, but the white folk only see the color of the blacks and they don’t see that they are people like them. They don’t put themselves in the blacks shoes and it’s not right. Everyone should be treated as equal.

I think that every one wants to be at the trial because is a colored person going against two white people. The chances of Tom actually winning are slim to none. I think that the kids want to go for two reasons first just because their curious and secound because they want to see their dad at work. Why do you think that the whole town wanted to go to the trial? I dont know I meen it would be a very interesting trial and every thing but why would people come from other towns to see the trial? I feel bad for Tom because he dident do anything wrong from my point of veiw and all of the farmers like Mr. Ewell wants to kill him or beat him up at least.

    ReplyDelete
  27. final post 8
I dont think that Tom did it he has alot more evedence and details than the Ewells do. I also think that Mayellas dad was the one who beat her up and who knows how long thats been going on for. I think that the reason that Mayella lied is because she was scared of what her dad would do to her. He seems like he would be drunk and she would mess up once and she would get beaten. During this time period everyone was very racist. The judge and the guy defending Mayella were very mean and dident really care what Tom had to say. And it was probley because he was black. I think that it was nice of Atticus to allow Jem, Scout and Dill to come back after they had supper to hear the verdict. When Dill and Scout left the court house they ran into that gye and they found out that he really only drinks cocacola because he thinks that it would be eseier for people to hear.

I agree with Atticus when he said that Mr. Ewell spiting him in the face he was just trying to get his dignety back. When Atticus accused Bob of beating Mayella and blaming it on Tom he said you a lieing peice of dirt pretty much. I dont think that the trial was fair because Tom was black and people dont see a trial like Jem and Scout like all people are equal and every ones the same. people in that time were so racist and so it wasent fair to Tom. I think that it took so long for the jury to decide because they actualy had to think about it. Like they almost made an unracist vote. When Jem said that mayby Boo just dosent want to come out it kind of all fell into place because if I knew that every one judged me then I wouldent want to be around them. I would want to go to a town far away and start fresh.

  29. Hi this is Danielle C. again. I think that one of the main turning points of the book was the conviction of Tom Robinson. After Tom Robinson is convicted, the people of Maycomb settle down about Atticus being called a nigger lover with the exception of Mr. Ewell. When he's convicted Jem is finally starting to realize the injusice of what has happened to Tom because he keeps getting upset whenever anyone brings up the trial. It really shows that he's begininng to grow up.

  30. When Atticus went to visit Toms wife I thought that it was nice of him to go and explain to her what happend. But when Bob came up to the car I was scared for Jem and stuff because I meen Bob was probley drunk and was out to get back at Atticus. Also when Helen went to work for Mr. Link Dees and Bob was yelling at her and following Helen I was scared that Bob was going to kill her or something. I thought that it was nice of Mr. Link to help Helen out like that because in that time whites dident stand up for blacks. I think that its cool that Scouts in a play at school I think that its weied that shes a ham but its the schools choice on what kind of play they want to do. Going back a chapter or two when tom was going to run and try to break free from the law kinda I really dont know how to word that, anyways I cant say that I blame him because when they shot him they shot to kill. So I would rather have a quick death than being shocked to death.

  31. Hi, this is Matt Boss from Ms. Johnson's honors class.

    Focus 9-
I have seen hipocrisy in people in my neighborbood toward people who don't socialize with people, just like Boo Radley. People assume that just because other people don't have the same social habits as them, that they are below them and don't deserve to be treated the same as everyone else. I believe that people are that way because they feel that anything that differs from what is considered the 'norm' is wrong.

Its the end of the book!!! When Scout and Jem were coming home and someone was fallowing them it was kinda intence. I meen they stoped it stoped I meen it was kinda a stalker moment. I think that it was both a good thing and a bad thing that Scout kept her costume on. First of all Bob could probley see her so it made them an esey target. The good reason is that it probley saved her life and all so thats a very good thing. I think that Boo was the one to pull Bob off of Scout because I dont think that Jem would be strong enough to do that. When Boo and Scout saw eachother I thought that it was so cool that she said "hi Boo", because she said it as if they were friends seeing eachouther after a long time of being apart. The different veiws between Atticus and Heck were like total oppisates. Attitcus was saying that Jem did it to save himself and Hecks saying that it was Bobs falt for falling on his knife. I wonder why Atticus wanted so badly for it to be Jem. I think that he thought that Heck was just trying to cover up for Jem. I wasent expecting Boo to ask Scout to walk him home. I guess it was because the rumor was that he was always out at night. When Scout said to leen down a little and bend his arm. I thought that it was so nice because she said that if Miss. Stephanie saw him she would see him as a gentalman and nothing less. At the very end of the book Scout said that she could see what Boo saw. Boo kinda had the "frount row seat" of the town, he could see every thing from his window. So in other words he knew everyones storys, habbits and rituals.

  33. I agree with you Matt. I dont think that it is fair to everyone else who a predudiced against. Everyone lives their own way. It is like someone coming into your own home and changing your ways. It's not fair. I have a coworker who believes that because he moved here from Toronto to work at our store, believes that he is above everyone. He even tells our managers that he is higher sority that they are and that he doesn't have to listen to them. Just because people don't do some things the exact way that you do, doesnt mean that they are below you. It doesn't mean that they are different in anyway, just different in how they handle the same situation.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yes it was pretty scary when Scout and Jem were walking home after the play. I mean, if I were to walk home and hear something following me, I would get pretty freaked out too! I think that Scout costume DID save her life. She is so little and having a grown man try to attack her and like try to squish her to death, it would have not been good. The chicken wire did the trick. Bob Ewell I have to say, is a pretty screwed up human being. What in your mind would make you think, “Oh, I am going to go and kill these kids because their father defended a black man, whom was found guilty and sent to jail where he tried to escape and was killed.” You have to be crazy in my opinion to want to do something like that. I also believe that it was Bob who beat up Mayella, not Tom Robinson. The only reason Tom was found guilty is because of the selfish acts of the ‘white’ jury. Boo Radley is a life saver, but he probably doesn’t see it that way. It was also very cute how Scout acknowledged Boo Radley like he was a long-time family friend. I think that Atticus was to in shock to believe the truth of how Bob died. I would have thought that Boo would have excused himself from the house to walk home. It was very nice of him to ask for assistance. I think it may have been to get to know Scout just a little bit more. Scout was worried about what other people would have thought of Boo, so she was kind enough to give him a hand home. It would have been so interesting to be Scout. This little girl that was so scared of this man at one time, now sees things from his point of view. I think that she understood that things in life may be scary at first, but the more you look into them and try them, the more they will seem less scary.
